Dennis Mellman To Lead
Federation's 1986 Campaign
I "Dennis Mellman, community leader and dedicated
volunteer, will be. the 1986
Campaign General chairman," announced Jack L.
Wallick, Columbus Jewish
Federation president. "I
have known Dennis and his
family for many years and
have worked with Dennis
through Federation and its
local agencies, and I know
that he will lead our 1986
Campaign to even greater
heights." In making the appointment, Wallick noted
that Mellman "takes hold"
and gives whatever "he's
doing a special energy.
A nine-time visitor to .Israel himself, one of Mell-
man's goals during the campaign year will be to get
more people to visit Israel.
He will be attending the
Leadership Training Mission
to Israel in August and the
President's Mission in
October.
Mellman wants to personalize the campaign and
get everyone involved. "Columbus has a fine Jewish
community," said Mellman,
"but I want everyone to
know that by working together we can make ■ our
community even better." He
emphasized that one important vehicle for involvement
is the United Jewish Fund
Campaign,
Mellman's Jewish community involvement includes the boards of the Leo
Yassenoff Jewish Center and
Hillel Foundation of the Ohio
■ State University. He is a
member of the Dean's Advisory Committee, Department of Humanities at OSU,
which is the umbrella for the
Mellon Center for Jewish
Studies. His Federation activities include membership
in the Budget Committees;
board member, past chairman of the Young Men's Division; Super Sunday chairman — 1983 and in the 1985
Campaign, general co-chairman. On a national level.
Mellman has served on the
Young Men's (Leadership
Cabinet and the United Jewish Appeal Campaign Cabinet.
"I am involved because I
am a Jew, and I believe in
the individual's effect on
Jewish survival. I value the
importance of the strength of
the local Jewish community
and. its intertwining effect on
the larger Jewish community world-wide," said
Mellman. "We have an outstanding home for the aged,
one of the finest Jewish community centers and at the
pulse of all of it — the Federation. Columbus has the potential to serve as a model in
community building. I want
evervone to know Columbus'
Dennis Mellman
influence on worldwide
Jewry," he added.
Mellman, vice president of
Columbus Jack, is the son of
Myer and Selma Mellman.

JERUSALEM (JTA) - A
Justice Ministry spokesman
said last week that Israel
will Continue the search for,
Nazi war criminal Josef
Mengele despite reports
from Brazil that the Auschwitz death camp doctor died
there by drowning six years
ago.
As long as there is no definite identification of the
body found in Brazil Israel
will continue its efforts to
capture Mengele and bring
him to justice and the $1 million reward for information
leading to his capture and
trial remains in effect, Yitzhak Feinberg of the Justice
Ministry said.
He was referring to the remains of a man buried under
the name Wolfgang Clerhard
in a cemetery in Enbu, 20
miles south of Sao Paulo in
1979, the victim of a swimming mishap. The body has
been exhumed and is undergoing forensic tests. Mengele's dental X-rays were
flown to Sao Paulo from
"West Germany to help with
the identification.
Report Called Fraud
Israelis and Nazi-hunters
here and abroad are largely
skeptical of the information
that has emerged so far,
which apparently has almost
convinced some Brazilian officials that the body belongs
to Mengele. Menahem
Russak, head of the Nazi
War Crimes Department of
the Israel Police declared in
a radio interview that Mengele is still alive.
Russak maintained that
the report'on the body was a
fraud perpetrated because
for the first time since the
end of World War II a serious
international effort has been
mounted to track down Mengele and substantial rewards
have been offered by Israel,
West Germany and by organizations such as the
Los, Angeles-based Simon
Wiesenthal Center.
Sources here noted that
ever since Israel offered its
reward, the search centers
in Israel, the U.S. and West
Germany have received information indicating that
Mengele is alive, adding to

Sources also observed the
."remarkable" coincidence:
As the heat was being turned
on Mengele, it is suddenly alleged he has been dead six
years. The question raised is
why the people who provided
this information chose to remain silent until now.
The Brazilian authorities
were led to the body in Enbu
on the basis of claims by an

Thus, on Nov. 3,1935, Capi- ,
tol Post #122 of the Jewish
War Veterans of the United
States was founded.
On Saturday, June 22, at
the fifty-second. State Convention of the'Department of
' Ohio JWV, the fiftieth arihi-'
versary of the post will be
marked with a reception and
cocktail hour. It begins at
6:30 p.m. at the Parke Hotel
on Morse Road. The reception will also honor outgoing
Department of Ohio Commander Claire Gelband, first
woman commander of both
Post #122 and the Department of Ohio.
Begun as the Sons of the
Union Army in 1896 to dispel
the belief that Jews did not
serve in their country's
armed forces, JWV is the
oldest active veterans' service organization in the
United States, according to
Gelband. Major activities of
the local post include marching in the Bexley July 4 Parade, decorating veterans'
graves, providing military
funerals and honor guards,
serving at the USO, helping
New Americans, Armed
Forces inductees and transferees and much more. In
addition, the post sponsors
the bi-annual Jewish Community Blood Drive, which
will be held on July 3 at the
Leo Yassenoff Jewish Center.
The organization's main
goal is service to the veterans and Americanism,
Larry Felsenthal, past post
and Department of Ohio
commander, explained; adding that "we like to be called
the 'patriotic voice of American Jewry.' "
Edmond Schecter is the
current commander of Post
#122; Herbert Solomon is
senior vice commander.
