Chronicle News Editor
Ben Zion Neustadt, 88,
founder and editor emeritus
of the Ohio Jewish Chronicle,
died Wednesday, Feb. 6, following a lengthy illness. He
would have been 89 next
week.
Neustadt, a graduate
pharmacist, came to Columbus in 1921 at the urging of
Fred Lazarus, Jr., E.J.
Schanfarber and Joseph
Schonthal, who felt that a
Jewish newspaper was needed to unite the community
behind a fund-raising effort
for European Jewry. Convinced of the merit of the
project,- Neustadt began a
career which spanned 64
years and included managing, writing and selling advertising for, publishing and
even delivering the Chron-
icle.
Forced, because of ill
health, to retire from the
paper in 1958, Neustadt
nevertheless ..maintained
close ties with it. He continued to sell advertising for its
New Year and holiday edi
tions, to write an occasional
article or editorial and to
serve the present publisher,
Milton J. Pinsky, in an advisory capacity. According to
Pinsky, "Ben never stopped
caring about the paper,
never stopped being an integral part of it.
