Schottenstein will meet with Cincinnati leaders Monday, Jan. 21, to discuss seven recommendations that emerged from a coast-to- coast JWB study on how Jewish Community Centers and YM-YWHAs can make most of their potential as ideal settings for Jewish educational programming. Schottenstein, leader of and major contributor to the building fund campaign for the Leo Yassenoff .Jewish Center, is a member of JWB's Committee on the Implementation of Recommendations. He served as a member of the JWB Commission on Maximizing Jewish Educational Effectiveness of Jewish Community Centers. | Schottenstein is a member of the Board of Directors of JWB. Hessian Town To Build Synagogue BONN (JTA) — The city council of Darmstadt has decided' to provide funds to build the first synagogue in that Hessian town since Nazi mobs destroyed the two old synagogues there during the infamous Kristallnacht nearly a half century ago. It will serve the 120 surviving Jews in Darmstadt and several other small Jewish communities in the southern region of the State of Hesse. Ruediger Breuer, a Darmstadt official who initiated the project, explained, "We are fed up with paying lip service to the suffering of the Jewish community in our town. It is high time to take action and we intend to do just that." Ethiopian Government Agrees To Accept Aid From Israel Court Rules Jehovah's Witnesses Part Of Zionist Conspiracy ATHENS (JTA) — The Jewish community is angered and disturbed over a ruling by a court in Candia, Crete, that the Jehovah's Witnesses, a Christian sect, bears a close resemblance to Judaism and is part of a Zionist conspiracy to rule the world from Jerusalem. Joseph Lovinger, president of the Central Board of Jewish Communities in Greece, an affiliate of the World Jewish Congress, denounced the ruling as "sheer nonsense" and warned that it would be seized upon by reactionary elements for vile propaganda purposes. TEL AVIV (JTA) - Ethiopia's Marxist government has finally agreed to accept direct aid from Israel to help alleviate famine, it was announced last week by Arye Harel, president of the Magen David Adorn. He said that despite severe economic difficulties here, the MDA, Israel's equivalent of the Red Cross, has raised a quarter million dollars for Ethiopian relief. The Ethiopian regime has no diplomatic relations with Israel, a country to. which it is hostile, and refused to ac- Hillel To Host Reception For Yehudi Menuhin Friends of Hillel, support group of the B'nai B'rith Foundation, will host a gala reception with Yehudi Menuhin and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. Yehudi Menuhin The reception is being dedicated by the Leon Schottenstein family to his memory. It will be held on the stage of Mershon Auditorium following the orchestra's performance on Monday, Feb. 18. All "Friends of Hillel" will have the- opportunity to meet Menuhin and the orchestra and enjoy a gourmet dessert menu. The reception benefits the Hillel Foundation. While Menuhin's name isy synonymous with the violin, he is also regarded as one of the world's finer conductors. He has guest conducted many of the leading orchestras including the New York ' Philharmonic, London Symphony Orchestra, Berlin Philharmonic, San Francisco' Symphony, English Chamber Orchestra and the National Symphony Orchestra of Washington, D,C. He has also founded and directed several major European music festivals, among them both the Bath and ' Windsor festivals in England and the festival bearing his name in Gstaad, Switzerland which he founded in 1956. . The tradition of the annual Friends of Hillel reception, was begun in 1982 with Zubin Mehta and the Israel Philharmonic. The tradition has continued with receptions for Vladimir Ashkenazy, the internationally acclaimed pianist and for Eugenia Zuckerman and the Israel Chamber Orchestra. Friends of Hillel dedicates Ihis year's reception with Yehudi Menuhin as the Leon Schottenstein Memorial reception. Friends of Hillel membership fees comprise an important part of the fund- raising effort which allows Hillel to continue its programs and services to Jewish students at The Ohio State University. Nathan Gordon is the chairman of this year's Friends of Hillel reception. Tifereth Israel To Celebrate Consecration Of First Graders Congregation Tifereth Israel will celebrate the Consecration of its first graders on Shabbat morning, Jan. 19. The students have been preparing for many weeks and will be participating in the Torah service, as well as the conclusion of the service. First grade teachers Heather Hallsy-Bernstein and Felice Orlove, as well as tefillah teacher, Jodi Fish- man, have worked with the first grade class in preparing theni for this special occasion. A Kiddush in honor of the class and their parents will follow the services. Members of this year consecration class'., are: Heather, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Fred Abramovitz; David, son of Rabbi and Mrs. Harold Berman; Simona, daughter of Mr. and Mrs, Jeffrey Covel; Amy, daugh- cept any assistance from Israel until now. Annual Blue Box Brunch will be held on Sunday, Jan. 20 at the Beth Jacob Synagogue, 11:30 a.m. Martin Hoffman, President of the Columbus ■Jewish National Fund Council for the past five years will be honored for his dedication to the continued development of the Land of Israel. At the Brunch the 1985-87 Executive Officers, President, Meyer Hoffman; Executive Vice President, Herman "Dutch" Geichman; Vice Presidents, Claire Gel- band, Hal Zeidman, Wendy Levine, Gary Covel; Treasurer, William Borden; Secretaries, Rhonda and Stephen Brazina, the Advisory Board chaired by Martin Hoffman and the General board will be installed for their term of office. The Blue Box has traditionally been the symbol of Jewish giving. In 1901, the Blue and White Box collected ~funds to purchase land in Eretz Yisrael, parcel by parcel. Shcharansky's Mother Granted Permission To VisitSonlnLaborCamp NEW YORK (JTA)-Avital Shcharansky has informed Soviet Jewish activists in the United States that her mother-in-law, Ida Milgrom, has been granted permission to visit Soviet Jewish Prisoner of Conscience Ahatoly Shcharansky in the Perm labor camp. The visit was scheduled for Monday, Jan. 14. Rabbi Avraham Weiss, chairman of; the Student Struggle for Soviet Jewry (SSSJ), said he received a - telephone call from Mrs. Shcharansky last week. She telephoned from Geneva where she reportedly met with members of the United States delegation to the arms talks with the Soviet Union. The SSSJ asserted that Soviet officials there had declined to meet with Mrs. . Shcharansky. Anatoly Shcharansky is , serving a 13-year sentence . after being convicted in 1978 on charges of spying for the United States. Center/JNF Sponsor Tu B'shvat Seder Feb. 3 at Center This year-the Israel/Judaic Department of the Leo Yassenoff Jewish Center and Jewish National Fund will be co-sponsoring a Tu B'shvat Seder and Celebration on Sunday, Feb. 3. The program will begin at 1 p.m. at the Center. It will feature a Children's Art and Poetry Exhibit and Contest, a Tu B'shvat Seder, Jewish National Fund display, refreshments and games. The Art and Poetry Contest will include works of students from local religious schools. The program will be oriented toward family participation and is designed for people of all ages. Trees to be planted in Israel will be available for purchase through Jewish National Fund.
