J. Fonda Meets
With Ida Nudel
NEW YORK (JTA) - Ida
Nudel, the Jewish refusenik
who has been denied an exit
visa to emigrate to Israel
since 1972, celebrated her
53rd birthday recently in her
exile city of Bendery. But unlike recent previous years,
when she marked her birthdays in solitude, she had a
guest this time: actress Jane
Fonda.
"We were the first Westerners to have visited her in
six years," Fonda1 said in a
press conference at the Hilton Hotel after she returned
from a five-day trip to the
Soviet Union. She was accompanied to the USSR by
her press secretary, Stephen
Rivers, and a Los Angeles
attorney, Marshall Grossman, who is familiar with
Soviet law.
Fonda said she went to the
Soviet Union to meet with
Nudel and to try to discuss
her case with Soviet officials. She said that while she
was in Moscow, she met with
V. V. Kuznetsov, head of
Ovir, the Soviet emigration
agency, and asked for Nudel
to be allowed to emigrate to
Israel to be reunited with her
sister, Elena Frjdman, who
lives in Jerusalem.
The Soviet official said
that Nudel's case is an "internal affair" and that it is
not different from many
other cases, Fonda said.
The world famous actress,
who has been taking a personal interest in Nudel's
case since 1980, after she
met with Nudel's sister in
Jerusalem, said that she and
her escorts spent three days
with Nudel. Fonda said
Nudel lives alone in a simple, "very small" house with
her dog.

Area congregations sponsored a memorial service for
victims of the Holocaust on
Sunday, April 29, that was
keynoted by a .talk by guest
lecturer Dr. Jeremy Cohen,
Professor of Jewish History
at Ohio State University!
The service was hosted by
Congregation Tifereth Israel. The hostesses for the
reception that followed the
service were: Lenora Reh-
man, chairwoman; Ruth
.Abramson; Manne Aronov-
sky; Mimi Dinit; Theresa
Kaplan; Ruth Seff; Anne
Swedlow; and Sue Weinberg.
The service 'included
selected readings in Hebrew
and English, including a Yiddish reading of a Jewish
partisan song's lyrics and its
English translation.
WASHINGTON (JTA) -
President Reagan disassociated himself last week from
the Ku Klux Klan, declaring
that they and other hate
groups have no place in
American political life. But;
the U.S. Commission on Civil
Rights called on Reagan to
directly repudiate the endorsement of his candidacy
by the Ku Klux Klan and for
the Rev. Jesse Jackson to reject the support of Black
Muslim leader Louis Farrakhan.
The Commission made
.these statements -after its
vice chairman,; Morris Abram, read a letter from Reagan tohim saying the President has "no tolerance for
what the Klan represents
and would have nothing to do
with any group of that type."
Abram noted that Mary
Berry, a member of the
Commission, brought to the
attention of the Commission
an April 17 news story in
which neither White House
,; spokesman t .Larry ; Speakes
nor the Reagan-Bush reelection committee headquarters would, comment on
Reagan's endorsement by
Imperial. Wizard Bill Wilkinson, leader of the Louisiana
based Knights of the Ku Klux
Klan: At a Georgia rally
April 14, Wilkinson told Klan
leaders that the Administration shares some of the same
beliefs as the Klan and the
Republican Party platform
"is pure Klan."
Reagan's letter to Abram
said: "While in China.T have
been distressed to learn that
some individuals back home
have questioned whether my
views on the Ku Klux Klan
have somehow changed
since 1980. Nothing could be
further from the truth.
• 'In 1980,1 said that I have
no tolerance for what the
Klan represents and would
have nothing to do with any
groups of that type. If anything, my feelings on this
subject have only grown
stronger. The politics of racial hatred and religious bigotry practiced by the Klan
and others have no place in
this country and are destructive of the values for which
America has always stood.
Those of us in public life can;
only resent the use of our
names by those who seek
political recognition for the
repugnant doctrines of hate
they espouse. _______

for Leo Frank, Wittenstein is
a leading expert in that
chapter of American history.

political life, for while there
are many issues which
divide us, it is fundamental
principles such as this which
will always draw us together."
Berry said that Reagan,
by referring to his 1980 statement, did not specifically repudiate the current endorsement by the KKK.' She said
she would like to see a statement to the Commission rejecting Wilkinson's" endorsement "flat-out."

NEW YORK (JTA)-
Americans For a Safe Israel
(AFSI), charging that
WNBC-TV presented distorted and one-sided coverage of the war in Lebanon
and therefore violated, the
Fairness Doctrine, said last
week that it had filed a petition with the Federal Communications Commission
(FCC) to deny renewal of the
station's broadcast license.
At a news conference at
Freedom House, Peter Goldman, director of AFSI, said
the group also filed petitions
against seven other New \
York State NBC affiliate stations.
AFSI contends that during
600 minutes of reporting on
the Lebanese conflict between June 4,1982 and Aug.
31, 1982 by NBC Nightly
News, less than 30 minutes
were devoted to airing Israeli perspectives, factual background information or objective points of view. Most of
the rest, according to AFSI,
was presented from the Arab
viewpoint.
In a 100-page brief filed
with the FCCr AFSI also
charged NBC and WNBC
with "purposeful" falsification of facts, biased reporting and editorializing, selective and tendentious interviewing techniques and biased terminology. AFSI
accused NBC of virtually ignoring the PLO's brutal
occupation of Lebanon and
