Arens Warns Against
Wedge

MIAMI BEACH (JTA)-
Ambassador Moshe Arens of
Israel warned here recently
that the world must never
get the impression that the
Arab states can drive a
wedge between the United
States and Israel.
"If that happens, what we
have built together can fall
apart like a house of cards,"
the Ambassador told more
than 900 leaders from major
cities in the U.S., Canada
and South Florida, at a gala
international dinner held to
welcome him to the United
States.
Referring to Israel's
evacuation from the Sinai,
which is scheduled to be
completed Apr. 25, Arens
said: "I feel that the United
States is obligated to help us
share the burden of this
three-country peace treaty. I
must add that if it had not
been for this treaty, Israel
today would be on the road to
economic independence."
"We have reason to expect
that the United States
government will help alleviate some of our financial
problems," Arens added.
Arens said that the immediate economic results of
the withdrawal from the
Sinai are a very heavy burden for Israel. He noted that
many new roads and communities had been built in
the Sinai and that a $6 billion
expenditure is necessary to
facilitate the evacuation.
"That is more than 25 percent of our gross national
product. Many other countries would not be able to
shoulder this burden," he
said. He stressed that
friends of Israel in the
United States were needed to
help in the task ahead,
Claims ©olan Druse Strike Distorted
LOS ANGELES (JTA)—An Israeli Druze member of the
Knesset told a meeting of the Community Relations Committee of Jewish Federation Council of Greater Los Angeles that
the media in the U.S. has exaggerated and distorted Druze
protests over Israeli annexation of the Golan Heights. Zeidan
Atashi, who has acted as an unofficial mediator between the
Golan Druze and the Israel government, said that only about
9,000 Druze live in the Golan as compared to some 45,000
living in the rest of Israel. And, of that number, he observed,
a "silent majority" do not support the general strike now in
its eighth week in the area to protest annexation.
No Sadness Over Carrington's Fall
JERUSALEM (JTA)—There has been no official reaction
here to the resignation of British Foreign Secretary Lord
Carrington amidst the crisis between Britain and Argentina
over the Falkland Islands. However, few Israelis expressed
regret over Carrington's fall, as he was never regarded a
friend of Israel.

"Fragments of Greatness Discovered: A Loan Exhibition
from Poland," consists of approximately 90 examples of rare
Jewish art and artifacts as well as works containing Jewish
subject matter by non-Jewish Polish artists.
Turkey Won't Break Ties With Israel
NEW YORK (JTA)—Foreign Minister liter Turkmen, of
Turkey, has told Turkish businessmen that his country is
seeking to play the role of a bridge between the West and the
Islamic countries and that the severance of diplomatic relations with Israel is not being considered.

NEW YORK (JTA)-A
newly formed broad-based
coalition of Jews and Chris- •
tians, "The Coalition to Stop
the Abandonment of Israel,"
is sponsoring a rally in
Washington on Sunday, Apr.
25, to express its concern
with the present course of
the Reagan Administration's
Middle East policies, it was
announced here by Peter
Goldman, spokesman for the
Coalition.
The rally, which will take
place in' Lafayette. Park,
opposite the White House, is
expected to attract thousands of people from the
Mid-Atlantic region, according to Goldman. He said
there is great concern in this
country among Christians
and Jews that American
Middle East policy is based
on appeasement of the Arab
nations at the expense of
Israeli and American
security.
"The rally is both a protest
against the Administration's
policies and an appeal to the
President to reaffirm and
implement his pledges and
principles in support of the
State of Israel," Goldman
said. "While we are rallying
for Israel, we are also rallying for the conscience of
America. While we are marching for a secure Israel, we
are also marching for a
secure America, since these
two concepts are inextricably linked."
Christian Appeal To Reagan
The Rev. Isaac Rotten-
berg, chairman of the National Christian Leadership
Conference for Israel, one of
the sponsoring groups, said
"the minds and hearts of
many Christians are going
out to the State of Israel as it
continues- to make many
sacrifices for peace.!': He
called upon Christians to appeal to President Reagan to j
' 'keep our word toi ■ our ally,
Israel" and to refrain from
applying pressure on Israel
to take risks .for peace
"whiPe delivering lethal
weapons to its enemies."
Goldman said that more
than 60 rabbis have formed a
Rabbinic leadership conference and joined the Coalition, A statement issued by
the co-chairmen of the Committee, which includes, according to Goldman, Rabbis
Fabian Schoenfekl, Shlomo
Riskin and Isaac Pupko, expressed "the strong feeling
of unease in the Jewish community about American
policv towards Israel " .
Goldman said sponsoring
. organizations of the rally include: Jewish Community

Zionist Organization of
