Sharon Visited Severs! African ©@yntri@s
JERUSALEM, (JTA)-Defense Minister Ariel Sharon visited several African countries before he flew to Washington
last week to sign the strategic cooperation agreement with
the U.S., it was disclosed today. Informed sources here linked the two visits. They said Israel's cooperation with several
African countries would increase, due partly at least to the
"new and enhanced standing" conferred on Israel by entering a formal strategic relationship with the U.S. .
NEW YORK (JTA)--A new Soviet documentary film on
the Nazi massacre at Babi Yar "distorts history" by virtually ignoring the murder of approximately 100,000 Jews,
according to. the Anti-Defamation League of B'nai B'rith.
ADL associate director Abraham Foxman said the 70-minute
film, like the Soviet memorial at the massacre site near
Kiev, neglects the principal victims of the World War II
slaughter. - -
WASHINGTON (JTA)-
The State Department
released a joint statement by
the United States and Israel
last Friday which said the
participation by four European countries in the Sinai
peacekeeping force is based
only on the Israeli-Egyptian
peace treaty and cannot be
linked to the Venice declaration of the European. Economic Community (EEC).
The' statement, read by
.Department Deputy spokesman Alan Romberg, said
that it was being issued after
both Israel and the U.S.
reviewed the "clarification"
which Britain, France, Italy
and The Netherlands sent
the U.S. last month.
The Europeans had originally linked their announcement on the Multinational
Force and Observers (MFO)
which v/ill patrol the Sinai
after Israel's final withdrawal next April with their ,
support for the 1980 Venice
declaration which calls for
Palestinian self-determination and the participation of
the Palestine Liberation
Organization in the Middle
East peace talks.
Last week's joint statement said that the European
clarification explained "that
they (the Europeans) recognize that the function of the
MFO is as defined in the
relevant Egyptian-Israeli
agreements and includes
that of insuring freedom of
navigation through the Strait
of Tiran... ; and that they
have attached no political
conditions, linked to Venice
or otherwise, to their participation."
A senior State Department
official, who briefed reporters on condition that his
name not be used, said he
believes the joint statement
will "facilitate" the participation of the four countries
in the Sinai force. He said
that Leamon Hunt, a retired
foreign service officer who
has been named director
general of the MFO, will go
to the four countries to work
out details of. their participation.
The senior official stressed
that the U.S. is committed to
the Camp-David process,
including the ongoing negotiations for autonomy for

SACRAMENTO, Calif.
(JTA)—Governor Edmumd
Brown, Jr. has appealed to
President Reagan to officially ask Soviet President
Leonid Brezhnev for a report
on Raoid Wallenberg, the
Swedish diplomat who saved
100,000 Jews in Hungary
from Uie. Holocaust.
. Brown made the appeal at
a meeting of the Board of
Directors of the Simon
Wiesenthal Holocaust Center
at the Yeshiva University of
Los Angeles, commemorating Wallenberg and his role
during the war years. Reagan recently awarded
Wallenberg honorary U.S.
citizenship for his heroic actions in issuing counterfeit
Swedish passports to Jews in
Hungary.
Wallenberg disappeared in
Budapest in 1945 where he
had been a representative of
the American War Refugee
Board attached to the Swedish Embassy. The Soviet
Union has claimed that
Wallenberg died in prison.
However, former Soviet
prisoners as well as many
prominent individuals
around the world believe
that Wallenberg is still alive.
.Brown told the meeting
that for 35 years "Jews all
over the world have attempted to learn the fate of
Raoul Wallenberg. Although
all efforts have failed, many
who have pursued this
search believe that Wallenberg may still be alive. Dead
or alive, Jewish people all
over the world cry out for
word of his fate... Raoul
Wallenberg, a non-Jew, is a
symbol of world concern for
the millions of Jews who died
during the Holocaust."
In a related action, the
Simon Wiesenthal Center
paid tribute to the Swedish
diplomat by presenting its
Simon Wiesenthal Humanitarian Laureate, in absentia, to Wallenberg. Nina Lag-
.qrgrfq, Wallenberg's sister,
accepted the award on her
brother's behalf. Wiesenthal, the Nazi-hunter, told
the 1,200 national leaders
from the arts and business
communities attending the
award ceremony, that

LONDON (JTA)-Shlomo
Argov, Israeli Ambassador
to Britain, clashed last week
with Eric Heffer, one of the
most powerful politicians in
the British Labor Party, who
had savagely attacked the
election campaign of Israel's
ruling Likud bloc.
The clash took place after
a speech by Israel's Labor
Party leader, Shimon Peres,'
to a fund-raising dinner of
the British Labor Friends of
Israel. Peres was the key
speaker but his remarks
were largely overshadowed
by Argov's defense of Premier" Menachem Begin
against Heffer's attack.
Heffer had harked back to
the tumultous scenes at
some of Begin's election
rallies which had been
prominently screened on
British television.. He called
then* frightening signs of the
intolerance being encouraged by the present Israeli
government. Argov, who had
been scheduled to give merely a brief message of greetings from his government,
passionately rejected Heffer's complaints, and asked
him whether he would like
foreigners to judge Britain
as a whole by some of the
scenes which he had recently
witnessed on television here,.
Even before Argov*s intervention, last week's dinner,
at the House of Commons,
had been marked by the political strains between the
British and Israeli Labor
Parties. Peres had started
his own speech by playing
down differences between
Israel's government and opposition over foreign policy
- andbitterly attacked the policies of Britain and its European partners.
Heffer, however, said that
while he supported Israel he
could not support Begin,
whom he called "not very

NEW YORK (JTA)-The
Asian Games Federation has
come up with a new method
of keeping Israel out of international competition. At a
meeting held last week, it
decided to replace itself next
year with a new sports
organization to be known as
the Olympic Council of Asia
(OCA). The meeting was
held in New Delhi and Israel
was not invited because,
according to Federation sec
retary general L.L. Mehta of
India, "it was not possible to
ensure the security arrangements for persons attending
from Israel."
Five other Asian Games
Federation countries, likewise, were not present there.
Those missing the session,
besides Israel, were Vietnam, Burma, Cambodia
Laos and Singapore. Conver
