Haig Denies Decision Made On
Begin Hint
JERUSALEM (JTA)—
Premier Menachem Begin
hinted strongly last week
that he intends to name Ariel
Sharon Defense Minister in a
new Likud government
despite the bitter controversy surrounding the ultra-
hawkish Yom Kippur* War
. hero. He said, on a television
panel interview, ttiat he be-'
lieved the appointment
would not now encounter, the
overwhelming opposition
raised within the Cabinet a
year ago when he favored
Sharon for the defense post ■
just vacated by Ezar Weizman.
Begin declined to say
flatly that he has decided to
appoint Sharon, observing
that tie would name his
Cabinet members only after
he receives a formal ''call"
from president Yitzhak
Navon to form a new government. Navon began consultations last Monday with,
representatives of various
parties in an effort to form a
new coalition government,
The final official results of
last month's elections were
issued last week. They
showed that Likud has 48
seats; Labor, 47; National
Religious Party,, 6; Aguda
Israel, 4; Hadash (Communists), 4; Tami;3; Tehiya, 3;
Telem, 2; Shinui, 2; Citizens
Rights Movement, 1. /
„ Begin also made clear his
personal sympathy for the
primacy of Orthodox
Judaism in Israel. He
claimed that the "Jewish
religion and Jewish nationhood are one and the same
thing'.' and that he has always favored a halachic
definition of conversion "because conversion is a purely
halachic concept.'
This placed him squarely
on the side of the/ National
Religious Party and Aguda
Israel which" are demanding

WASHINGTON (JTA)-
Secretary of State Alexander
Haig denied last week that a
decision has been made
when to send to Congress the
Reagan Administration's
proposal to sell AWACS
reconnaissance planes and
other military, equipment to
Saudi Arabia.
Speaking to reporters
after testifying on his recent
Vsia trip at a closed session
«>f the House Foreign Affairs
Committee, Haig also said
'there is no decision" on
vhether to lift the suspension of delivery to Israel of
tour F-16 jet fighters, imposed after Israel's June 7
raid on Iraq's nuclear reactor. He said he gave the

"Hospitals in the central
Ohio region could request
more than 4,000 units of
blood during the next weeks
of summer. Blood that;may
be needed by family, friends
and neighbors of our own
community," no.tes Sol
Derfler, coordinator of the
upcoming Jewish-community bloodmobile sponsored
by the Capital Post No. 122,
Jewish War Veterans of the
United States of America.
According to Derfler, the
summer holiday season, can
take its toll on blood collection levels.. "Holidays usually mean a more difficult
time scheduling blood-
mobiles and less available
collection days.
On Tuesday, July 21, from

Committee members.
Haig said he was asked
about the AWACS proposal
when he testified before the
Senate Foreign Relations
Committee but that it did not
come up at the House Committee. He said he had read
the "speculations" in newspapers that the AWACS proposal would be submitted.
He stressed that the Administration is. still discussing
the "timing" for submission
of the proposal with leaders
of Congress and that the decision "depends in large
measure""on the advice the
Congressional leaders will
jive.
The Administration has.
delayed submitting the proposal on the advice of Senate
Republican leaders who believe there are enough votes
in both the Senate and the
House to reject the sale.
Haig rejected a reporter's
assertion that the U.S. was-
"negotiating" with the
Saudis on the AWACS. He
said the Administration was
discussing with the Saudis
and others the "modalities"
of the proposal. The Administration is believed to be
seeking a nieans of continuing American control .over
the five AWACS to be sold to
Saudi Arabia as a way of
reassuring Senators and
Congressmen who fear that

celebration sponsored by the
JNF. This celebration will
culminate with a tea on October 25, 1981 at the home of
Mr. and Mrs. Edwin M. Ellman. The highlight of this
event will be the presentation of Golden Book certificates to the senior citizens
honored by their children
and relatives by this inscription in the Golden Books in_
Jerusalem.
Mr. Hoffman states, "The

honor the 80th Anniversary-
of JNF and the senior citizens of Columbus. The idea
of honoring our senior citizens during this special celebration truly stems from the
concept of the JNF. What
more important people are
there than our parents and
grandparents. The trees
they have planted for many
years and the coins they
have dropped in the Blue
Boxes have allowed the JNF
to succeed in their many
challenges in aforestation,
land reclamation, road
building and site preparation
for new settlements in our
beloved Israel."
