to ensure a well-controlled
. and manageable run. As of

generous in supporting the

State Beverage Co. is providing the support for the
souvenir booklet which will
be given free to all runners.

coupons and underwriting
part of the advertisement
budget. ,

and Jewish National Fund.
In the United States the 350
Cantor Yehuda Shifman
General Moshe Dayan will
appear at the Ohio Theatre
on Monday, Nov. 19 at 8 p.m.
His appearance, the only
Ohio stop on his 10-city national tour,' is sponsored by,
the International Council of
Mid-Ohio.
As Foreign Minister
Dayan played a vital role in
'the negotiations which led to
the Camp David accords last
year. His recent resignation
was caused by his basic disagreement over Premier
Menachem, Begin's policy
for the occupied West Bank
. and Gaza Strip.
The International Council
of Mid-Ohio was formed in
October of 1975. fhe council's principal goals are to
promote and enhance the
image of, Columbus and
central Ohio as an internationally-oriented community, and to provide information concerning important
. world issues through public

forums, symposia and special events.
Dayan was born in Kibbutz
Degania, one of the' first
Jewish collectives in Pales- -
tine, on May 20, 1915.- His
parents came from Russia
and were among, the founders of this new type of agricultural settlement.
He began his record of ser-

By David Landau ,,
JERUSALEM, (JTA) -
The Cabinet Friday empowered the Ministerial Defense Committee to find another site for the Gush
Emunim settlement of Elon
Moreh. But the two principal
supporters of the Gush, Agriculture Minister Ariel Sharon and Education Minister
Zevulun Hammer, dissented
angrily and fear was expressed in some circles that this
might encourage the settlers
to resist forcibly when the
army carries out the Supreme Court's Oct. 22 order
to dismantle the settlement
in 30 days.
The Cabinet majority
made it clear that the government will abide by the
high court's ruling that Elon
Moreh was established illegally on seized Arab lands
and must be removed. But
the issue has aroused intense
emotions. Sharon, a member
of, the Ministerial' Defense
Committee, declared that he
would have no part in the effort to find an alternative
site for Elon Moreh.
Acccording to an Israel
Radio report, Sharon stalked
out of the Cabinet room when
Defense Minister Ezer Weizman began a lengthy presentation of his views that the
settlement question must be
dealt with in the broader
context of the overall peace
process. After the session,
Hammer, a leader of the National Religious Party, said
he. was "dissatisfied" that
the Cabinet has deferred a
showdown on the settlement
issue.
' The debate over future settlement policy in light of the
Supreme Court's' Elon
Moreh decision began Friday but reached no conclusions. It will be resumed
at another session within 10
days, the Cabinet
announced.
In preparation for .the debate, the Defense Ministry
has compiled statistics
showing that - since 1967
61,000 dunams (15,000 acres)
of privately owned land on
the West Bank have been seized by the military authorities and 80,000 dunams
(20,000 acres) were purchased from private owners,
The crisis over Elon
Moreh developed when the
Supreme Court flatly rejected the government's
claim that the- settlement
was necessary for security
purposes. It charged that
civilian authorities .used
security as a pretext to satisfy the demands of the Gush
Emunim and that the mili-,
tary knowingly went along
with that subterfuge.
Much of the Cabinet session was taken up by a vituperative exchange between
Sharon and Attorney General Yitzhak Shamir. Shamir
took the Agriculture
Minister to task for his bitter
public attacks on the Supreme Court's decision and
his charges that government
attorneys mishandled the
case before the high court.
Shamire echoed the extraordinary public rebuke delivered to Sharon yesterday by
Amnpn Goldenberg, chairman of the Tel Aviv Bar

vice to his country at the age
of 14, when he became a
member of the Haganah, the
underground,Jewish defense,
force in British-mandated
Palestine.
In 1939, with the issuance
of a British white paper favoring Arab nationalism,
Dayan was apprehended
with other Haganah members and sentenced to five
years in prison.
Released in 1941, he served
with British and French forces in liberating Syria and
Lebanon. It was then that he
lost his left eye in action and
adopted the black patch that
has become his trademark.
In Israel's War of Independence (1948-49) Dayan com
. manded a battalion on the
Syrian front and rose to! th<
top command of. the Jerusalem front. He was later
appointed to the position of
Chief of Operations of the Is:
rael Defense Force.
After attending staff college in Britain, he returned
to become Chief of general
staff in 1953 with the rank of
Major-General, a position
which he held until January.
.1958.
Upon leaving the Army,
General Dayan studied at
the Hebrew University in
Jerusalem until his election
in 1959 to Israel's Knesset.
He was appointed Minister
of Agriculture in 1959 as
well, serving for five years
under Prime Minister David
Ben-Gurion and then Prime
Minister Levi Eshkol.
Dayan resigned from the
cabinet in 1964. when he
joined former Prime
Minister Ben-Gurion and
others to form a new
political party, Rafi.
In May, 1967, on the eve of
the "Six Day War." Premier
Eshkol appointed Dayan to
be Minister of. Defense, and
Dayan went on to play a crucial role in Israel's third war
with the Arab states.
Following the war. General Dayan's reputation was
further enhanced by his administration of the occupied
territories.
As an architect of Israel's
"Open Bridges Policy" he
helped to build an effective
foundation for developing
Arab-Israeli relations..
General Dayan is the
author of three books: ."The
Diary of the Sinai Campaign" (1967): •"Moshe
Dayan: The Story ot My.
Life" (1976) and "Living
With the Bible" (1978).
