The general health and
physical conditions of the
American Jew and the
Israeli Jew are poor and
need a great deal of
consideration if we, as a
people,-want to extend our
life span, feels Dr. Hillel
Ruskin; an Israeli consultant
to ,the National Jewish
Welfare Board.,
Having served as
chairman of the department
of health and physical
education- at the Weingate
-Institute in Jsrael, and •
presently on a' three-year
sabbatical from Hebrew.
University where- lie is
chairman ' of the physical
education department, Dr.
Ruskin is well qualified to
speak out in this field.
Dr. Ruskin, in an
interview with the. Ohio
Jewish Chronicle, explained
the, purpose of his coming to
1 the United States. He is here
to ^answer the question
"What is Jewish - about
physical activity," and to
develop procedures on""how
to make physical activities
and programs more Jewish
oriented programs, how to
make them more recreation
oriented programs and how
to' make them more
scientifically based
programs..."
According to Dr. Ruskin,
environmental factors that
affect heart conditions are
Dr. Hillel Kuskin
also factors which generally
affect Jewish people. These
factors include inactivity,
obesity, smoking, high blood
pressure, a high level of
cholesterol, and stress
patterns brought on by the
high level of achievement
which typifies the Jewish
people,
"We carry "with - us a
tradition , of over-
intellectualizing our lives.
For the Jews, natterns of
leisure behavior always
were spiritual' kinds of
activities, not active' ,'. ."
noted the physical' fitness
.expert. , '
Dr. Ruskin says
Americans try to find ways
how not to be active, and he
uses health clubs as an
example. "It is not a place to
be healthier, it's a place to
indulge yourself, do all kinds
of pleasurable activities:

• In, contrast to present
times, Ms. Abzug recalled
America's actions during
World War II by referring to
a /recently' released film
"Voyage of the Damned."
The movie, based on a true
story, tells the tale of 900
Jewish men, women and
children who sailed from
Germany to Cuba in the
spring of 1939. Most had paid
the Nazis exorbitant
amounts of money to leave
Germany, and more than
half held entrance visas to
theU.S.
In the film, the ship is re¬
fused landing rights in Cuba-
and President Franklin D.
Roosevelt"ordered it out of
U.S. territorial waters.-Jews ,
were not wanted," "'she
stated. A high percentage of
the passengers wound up in
. concentration camps.
" "It's always a shock, what
an .important reminder that
our great country and our
great voice and symbol of
freedom!".. bore the respon¬
sibility for that shameful epi¬
sode," she continued.
"It has always impressed
me that at the same time we
had a refusal also to bomb
the rail line to Auschwitz,
even when the Jewish lead-'
ers begged and pleaded our
government to do so.... but
at the very same time the
Allies refused to .bomb the
rail lines to the crematory
