Marvin L. Glassman, UJFC President hands Iloward R. Schoenbaum a check tor $100,000 authorized by thc UJFC Board as a measure of their lolal support for Israel.
Over $1,000,000 Israel Bond Sales Reached
Howard R. Schoenbaum, Campaign Chairman of the 1970 Columbus State of Israel Bond drive announced that for the first'time in the 20 yeqr history" of Tsrael Bond sales in Central-Ohio the combitaed campaigns of^ Columbus, Dayton, Springfield, Lima, Marion and Zanesville went over the one million dollar figure. The cash total for bonds in .1970 was'$250,000 more than was collected for Israel in 1967. Mr. Schoenbaum said this was part of the continuing realization of American Jewry and other friends of Israel that Israel was America's one hope for peace in the Middle East and to keep her strong was to keep hopes for democracy in that part of the world intact.
Support for Israel has been universal and not fra'c- tionalized into support of Israel Bonds or support for UJA to the exclusion of the
other. One of the finest examples of this was the purchase of a $100,000 Israel Bond by the United Jewish Council through the Colttmbus United Je)vish • Welfare ^' Foundation!.. This " slil&tahtial purchase coming right before the High Holy Days sparked a tremendous response from those congregations holding High Holy Day appeals for Israel Bonds.
Israel's needs continue at an all time high and it is only through the continued participation / of Jews throughout, the' free world that Israel will prevail through her current crisis, Mr. Schoenbaum said. The .purchase of Israel Bonds by the UJFC was more than an immediate response ^o Israel's needs, it also symbolized the closing of ranks of all Columbus Jewry to work together to help Israel.
NEW YORK, Jan. 3 (JTA)- -Even as Jewish and non - Jewish political and com¬ munity leaders throughout the- world expressed-' gratification at the com¬ mutation of death sentences given two Jews in the Leningrad ll|pal and hailed the reduction of the sen¬ tences of three other ' defendants as a voice of conscience, the Soviet Union was beginning 'the" trfdl of nine more Jews Jan. 6 in Leningrad. In addition. Wolf Zaitnansoit, who was arrested together with the other 11 persons on June I& at Smolny Airport in Lenihgrad for allegedly plotting to hijack a Soviet ¦airliner, is scheduled this week to face a court martial. Zaimanson is a lieutenant on active army duty. A third group bf 11 or 12 Jews also fape trial in Kishinev and' .. Riga.'While the exact dat^ of ' their trial is still riot known, it is believed it will begin within the next two weeks. According to information released this weekend by the American Jewish Com¬ mittee in the form of an extract from an interview conducted by Steven^ Wind- mueller with a 2&-year-old Russian Jew whose identity ' was not revealed because his family and friends still reside in the Soviet Union, the Leningrad nine have been charged with knowing about the alleged hijacking and not reporting it. The
Kishinev - Riga defendants have been charged with anti - Soviet activities, namely, ilpreading Zionist propaganda.
Jewish travelers arriving in Israel from -the Soviet Union during the past few days said it was likely that the nine Jews facing trial this week will "confess" in court to anti - Soviet ac- ttvitTes..'Unlike the secret trial of the Leningrad 11, this trial is expected to be open to
the public and press.. The travelers also reported that some 40 Jewish youths have been arrested recently in Leningrad by secret police. According to informed sources, the Leningrad Nine were charged under articles 70 and 72 of the Russian Federation Criminal Code. These cover anti - Soviet propaganda and agitation and "organizational activity directed to commission of especially ,dangerous crimes
against the state and-also participation in anti - Soviet organizations." Under ar¬ ticle 73, the maximum sentence is death or 15 years imprisonment if the sentence is connected with treason or flight abroad. Eight of the nine accused are reported to be' engineers. The death sentences handed down against Mark Dymshits, 43, and Edward Kuznetsov, 31, was commuted to 15 years
