nual campaign, the leaders and workers remember with pride and a sense of achievement the years which have pa.s.sed since its inception,,and its first drive. It was Spring, 1940. The war In Europe was still in a stlitic stage. "Pearl' Harbor," to mosl AiViericans, was just another place on the map, which most of us couldn't have identified. Dachau. Auschwitz. And yet. even then, the .lew¬ ish community of Columbus was geared to meet the needs of Its people, locally, on the national .scene, and in Europe, where'the first rumblings of the dread days l(i come were being heard. For many years, the men of our city had given generously, through the Unlled .Jewish'Fund, in a cenlral, once-a-year campaign, lo many agencies which would otherwise have conducted separ¬ ate drives for funds. The sug-
ple was still a crazy scheme in geslion that women, loo. join in the niind of a power-hungry this campaign, that women madman. The drama of the Hirlh I should give of ihcir lime, of
exiicnse money, "oul of their own pockets, "was received with skepticism. It was an attitude of "well, what h;we we got lo lose." IhaUthe Women's Division of the U.IF was first organized, in Ihat memorable Spring of 19-10.
Under the Inspired and bril¬ liant leadership of Mr. Edwin .1. Schanfarber, of blessed memory, and led by Mrs. A. J. Kobacker, the first campaign proved con¬ clusively, how much the city of Columbus had gained by the creation of the Women's Divi¬ sion, for even thai first year, 7.'')0 women pledged and paid $12,000 to the U.IF of Columbus.

Coiumbus was honoietl this week to have two distinguished leaders explain the vital needs of Ihc United Jewish Fund this year al a (Juoslion-and-Answer session al Ihe home of Ralph l.azarus, president of the U.IF campaign, last Tuesday evening.
Israel .lacobson. formerly dir¬ ector of the Joint Distribution Coniniillee in i-lungary. and Ar¬ thur l.iverhant. first Secretary of the Israeli Emba.ssy in Wash- lij.gti)n. gave a graphic picture of conditions in Europe and Israel as Ihcy exist today.
Mr. .lacobson. stressed the ur¬ gency of providing funds to lraiisp(jri immigrants from I'".iir- (i|ic. the Far i'ltisl. and Moslem countries lo
instances in war-torn Hulgaria of .lewish men and women, wlio Iwcause of lack of dollars, could nill be transported lo the sanct¬ uary of Israel. Men and women who were literally forced lo live wilh the same people who op- pre.s.sed Ihem under Hitler's re¬ gime . . . iieopic who today have merely substituted olher dictat¬ orial ideologies.which keejijews under constant oppression and ridicule. "If," he continued, "we do not move these displaced persons into productive employ- It^ent in Israel; If the need Is not alleviated this year, because we fall to give enough, the burden looms larger and more danger¬ ously on the horizon of tomor¬ row. It means greater sums next year and the year after to trans¬ port this ever-groWihg popula¬ tion to Israel." It means DKATH to millions of fellow Jews.
He continued, in- a choked I that is basic and iicrmanent!

Mr. Liverhanl told exactly how the dollars you give to the UJF were dislribuled overseas. 'i'o them, all Jews are welcome; .lews from every part of the world who sepk refuge in this community. It is our moral duly to tiid our brother Jews to find the freedom and independence Ihcy seek. As Rahbi S. W. Rubin¬ stein of the Agudath Achim Con¬ gregation so aptly put it: "We are a generous people; we must give generously." .
