Kick-off Dinner for UJF Drive is Great Success
That the- spirit of sueh IticaJ leaders as Etlwin J. Schanfarber, Simon Lazarua anti Etlwartl J, Gootlman lives antl will con- tine to inspire their co-workers who took up their unfinisheti ¦work in the greatest of ail hu¬ manitarian efforts, the United Jewish Fund of Columbus, was much In evidence at last Tues¬ day evening's annual dinner- meeting, at the Winding Hollow Country Club. .
The affair, whflcH every year highilghta the launching of the local fund-raising effort for more than 55 agencies vital lo Jew¬ ish existence, welfare and pro¬ tection throughout the -world, was without iloubt a, most out¬ standing event, from the stand¬ point ot enthusiasm and re- spon.se.
One of the largest sums ever ralsetl was reporletl Tuesday evening liy .subscriptions turned in for the UJIi"s 1948 kick-off dinner.
That here in, Columbus We find a united Jewry wiilh a re¬ sponse to all vital Jewish need.s, was indeed exemplified this iveek.
The meeting wa^ opened by Robert Weiler, who sulistituted for Samuel N. Summer, presi¬ dent of the United Jewish Fund of Columbus, who could not at¬ tend due to illness. It was most regrettable that Mr. Summer
could not be present for this spirited gathering of welfare- minded citizens, as he would have received a great thrill at lhe enthusiasm tiisplayed. We bespeak for him an, early and complete recovery, so tbat he can assume the active leader¬ ship of the Fund, which previ¬ ously was headetl by the late Simon Lazarus.
Trltiules Piild - A beautiful,,filing tribute was paitl Mr. t^azarus tlirough a res¬ olution adopted by the Fund
Board, antl read by I. W. 'Garek, former UJF campaign chairman and well-known figure in Je'wish life in Coiumbus.
An expression ot sympathy was also extended to the famlly- of Edward J. Goodman, one of the early pioneers of the United Jewish Fund after the first World War, and honoraiT chair¬ man of the 1948 F\irniture and Household Appliance Division.
Spealdng in an eai-neat, simillo manner, Mr. Leo Yassenoff, funrl drive general chairman for 1948,
tleclarptl that the greatesst sum in U.IF history is necessary this year. He appealeil to all present for increasetl giving, and re- vtviled the stupentlous needs ex¬ isting in Europe for relief antl rchalillltatkm of o.ur people, and to aitl in their siruggle tor a homeland in.Palestine.
Mr. Yassenoff sireasetl the point that "our brethren over¬ seas look to us as their only hope for salvation—that onlywe, here in free America—can Iiring thom new life, new homes, anil a
