Plain Talk BORROWED COLUMN ... BY AL SEGAL I This is going to he another guy's column: Ifs a far lietler one than any 1 could write today. It came to me by way of a reprint in a pamphlet Issued hy the Naturalization Council of Kansas City, Mo. The Naturalization rouneil was proud of it as a fine Amer¬ ican utterance. This is how it came about: A. city councilman in Baltimore named John H. Reed got up in council to read a llst ot the names of persons appointed as assistant city .solicitors in Balti¬ more. He didn't like the sound of these names at all. They were foreign-sounding. Councilman Reed accentuated his distaste for such names. Columnist Louis Asrael of the Baltimore News-Post wrote Councilman Reed an open letter in his column. This is the letter: Dear John: You read a list of names in the Council a few days ago. With emphasis on the foreign sound of some, you read: 'Dewicki, Fried¬ man, Hicclutl, Jacobs, Adler, Sherry, Cohen, Silverstein, Dou¬ glass, Rothstein." And in tones of di.s'gust you added: "It's a United Nations list. Nothing much for the Irish and Arabs." Now, John, I don'l believe that you are con.sclously vicious. You may mean, well. But there is much that you don't understand. Do you mind if we chat awhile? The men and women whose names you read have been ap¬ pointed to be assistant city soli¬ citors and you crlik-izecl their ap¬ pointments. Now, if you eriti- f\y.p on the grounii that they are not good lawyers, that's all right — for whatever your opinion on lawyers is worth. If you ciitlcize on the ground that they aren't honest or reputable, that's all right—insofar as you are a judge of honesty or reputa¬ tion. If you criticize, as someone else rlid, beeause of a suspicion that some are "plnki.'>b", that's all right, loo, if you can prove it. Had you objected on grounds of political ractionalisni that would he sad. hut not unusual in poli¬ tics. But the criticism ,\ou tniulc nr implied is lltat some oC the ap- IJointees came froni foreign lands or ai'e descended front pL'o- l)lc Who tlid. And thai shows your laclf'of understanding. You must understand, John, that you live in a place named .America—the United States of America. That name is not mere¬ ly a postal address. It is the name of a nation wilh history, with, principles, with basic ideals. (Coottnued od puee 11) S.O.S. COMMITTEE ANNOUNCES CANNED FOOD CANVASS, NOV. 14 The S. O.
