Mr. Schwartz did an outstand¬ ing job In his assigned task Is best indicated by the over¬ whelming approval of the chos¬ en Bexley site by the entire membership at a recent meet- Ing. factor in the ultimate establish¬ ment there of a .lewish Home¬ land w a s advocated by Dr. Chaim Welzmann. president of Ihc World Zionist Organization iind the .lewish Agency for Pal¬ estine, when he appeared last l*'riday as witnes.s before the Anglo American ' Committee of ln((itlry on Palestine now hold¬ ing its sessions here.
Dr. Weizmann told the inves¬ tigators that while he favored the ultimate establishment of a .lewish State in I'alestlne when .lews reach a majority in that country through free immigra¬ tion, he was not preiiared to de¬ mand the immediate establish¬ ment of such a slate. "Palestine ha.s room for double or treble its inhabitants," Dr. Weizmann lold (he committee, adding that the majority of European Jews wished to leave blood-drenched F^urope in which there is no fu¬ ture for them. Al the same lime he urged that immediate action be taken on Prealdent Truman's request for the admission of 100,000 displaced European Jews lo .Palestine. While testifying. Dr.' Weizmann declared that it might not be possible to admit all those Jews this year. But In a subsequent memorandum- submitted to the cbmmlttee he Corrected that statement, de¬ manding the immediate admis¬ sion of those Jews. In the mem¬ orandum, he stressed that he was referring to the 100,000 Jewish orphans In Europe when he made that assertion. Absorptive Capacity Problem Dwelling on the problem of Palestine's absorptive capacity, Dr. Welzmann said that absorp¬ tive capacity did "not grow on trees or in the streets" but that it "must be developed by those tx> whom it's a matter of life and death." of the mosl int/jfesUng iecturerrs in Jewi^h-liXean America today. He always treats tiis subjects with great thoroughness and clarity. It is the leading eve:nt of the Cultural Group for the season and the sponsors feel that they are offering the Co¬ lumbus community a rare intel¬ lectual treat. , ,
The meeting is open'to the public and will be held In the Gold Room of the Fort Hayes Hotel next Tuesday, March 19, at 8 P. M. An invitation is being extended to all Zionists and friends to attend.
That the Columhus Jewish community Is conscious nf its people's contribution to civlll zallon thru the musical arts was much tn evidence at the Colum¬ bus Gallery, of Fine Ai^s last Tuesday evening when an over¬ flowing crowd packed the audi¬ torium for an evening of Jewish- music. In fact several Jitinrired I people were turned/away, as even standing nyrfn was not available for tUm first all-Jew¬ ish musical treat ever present¬ ed here.
The local Bureau of Jewish Eklucatlon, headed by the cap¬ able director. Daniel Harrison, should be highly commended for this outstanding attraction. It was indeed a real contribution to a much receptive and appreci¬ ative audience.
We feel certain that last Tues- diay nlght',s performance will long be remembered by the many who were fortunate enough to attend and that the sponsors will make "An Even¬ ing of Jewish Music" an annual event-In a much larger auditor¬ ium so that the greater masses may have the opportunity to enjoy it.
The gratitude of a united Jew¬ ish community goes to"-%Klocal Jewish artists who participated in the success of this Worth- ,while endeavour.
