Jewish Agency Unlikely To Get if. N. Representation
FLUSHING MEADOWS (JTA) —The Jewi.sh Agency is unlike¬ ly to secure representation at United Nations General Assem¬ bly on Palestine, which opened here Monday, it was indicated by various delegations, follow¬ ing the election of Oswaldo Ar¬ anha, chief Brazilian delegate, as president of the Assembly. Dr. Aranha received 45 of the 50 votes cast.
The' Steering Committee, which will act on the Agencys demand for representation,. Is composed of the seven vice-pres¬ idents of the Assembly and the chairmen of the six principal committee^ all elected by the Assembly. The vice-presidents are the representatives of the Big Five; Alexander ParodI ot France, Warren R. Austin of the U. S., Sir Alexander Cadog- an of the United Kingdom, Dr. Kuo Tal-chl of China and Andrei A. Gromyko of the USSR, plus Asaf AU of the Indian delegation and Dr. Neftall Ponce, Ecua¬ dorian delegate. >
The six committee chairmen are Lester B. Pearson of Cana da, for the Political and Secur¬ ity Committee; Dr. Jan Papanek ot Czechoslovakia tor the So¬ cial Committee; Mahmoud Has¬ san Pasha ot Egypt for the Economic Committee; Hetman G. Eriksson of Sweden, for the Trusteeship Committee; Josef Wlnlewlcz of Poland, for the Budgetary Committee; and Dr. Tlburclo Carlas of Honduras for the Legal Committee.

CATHOLIC WOMKN URGE CONGRESS TO AUTHORIZE ADMISSION OP D.P.'s
WASHINGTON (.ITA)—The board of directors of the Nation¬ al Ci*jncil of Catholic Women, meeting here this .week, adopted statements urging the United States "to set an example to the rest of the world by accepting a sizeable proportion of the dis¬ placed persons" and endorsed Congressional action to make that possible.
The group also adopted state¬ ments urging the .United Na¬ tion.s to set up "as soon as }x>s- slhle" machinery to enforce hu¬ man rights everywhere and also urged Congress to give finan¬ cial support to the IRO. They also urged that the IRO "be lib¬ eral in its Interpretation" of refugees, "so that undue hard¬ ships will not be wrecked on innocent and defenseless people possessing neither homes nor homelands."

Last night residents of Bex¬ ley and Eastmoor enthusiastical¬ ly welcomed the grand opening of the beautiful new Esquire Theatre, the eighth in the Acad¬ emy chain operated by Messrs. Leo and Milton Yassenoff, well known figures In the construc¬ tion and Theatre operation field In Columbus. This Is the sec¬ ond thefitre to be dedicated this spring by the Yassenoff firm, the University being Its Immedi¬ ate predecessor.
The Esquire is located at 3016 E. Broad St., at Chesterfield Hd., on the dividing line between Bexley and Eastmoor. It Is the only theater on the north side of Broad St., east of the down¬ town district.
This new house, designed and constructed by the F. & Y. Build¬ ing Service, Is a modern struc¬ ture of buff brick and Colum¬ bus-quarried limestone, trimmed with terr^ cotta.
Its auditorium has that de¬ tail, so pbpular at the Univer¬ sity, namely, push-back seats, ¦which eliminate patrons stand¬ ing for others to enter a theater row. It haa a handsome curtain of spun glass and the same type of glass derivative, which is fireproof, is the walls, which are Indirectly lighted by piaster baroque ornaments. A special prayer asking for the success of the nationwide $170,000,000 campaign of the United Jewish Appeal will be offered in synagogues and tem¬ ples throughout the United Stales this Saturday, May 3, which has been designated Uni¬ ted Jewish Appeal Sabbath by the Synagogue Council of Amer¬ ica, it was announced yester¬ day at the national headquarters of the United Jewish Appeal, 342 Madison' Avenue.
Rabbi William F. Rosenblum, President of the Synagogue Council of America, which repre¬ sents more than 2,400 orthodox, conservative and reform rabbis in all parts of the nation, an¬ nounced that the-speclal prayer will be offered because "tJie needs which must be met by the United Jewish Appeal this year are without precedent in Jewish history,"

Mr. Morgenthau explained that the .$170,000,000 campaign ot the United Jewish Appeal will support the reconstruction programs ot the Joint Distribu¬ tion Commitlee, which provides relief and rehabilitation aid Overseas; the United Palestine Appeal, which provides for the mass- settlement of the Jewish homeland in Paieatlrie to facili¬ tate the maximum absorption of Europe's homeless Jews; and the United Service for New Ameri¬ cans, which aids Jewish refu¬ gees reaching the United States in their adjustment to the Amer¬ ican way of life.
