But, when that star of stars, the sun of suns, in final blaze of majectic glory vanishes into eternity, then the entire universe is enveloped in darkness. With the passing of our beloved leader, Edwin J. Schanfarber,. the sun of our life has been Wrested from us by a judgment Ihat transcends human grief. Our hearts together with the hearts of American Jewry beat in cry¬ ing anguish at the tragedy that has befallen us in this, the darkest and most crucial moment of our history. There arc but very few indeed among the thousands in American Jewish life who can measure up to Ihc high standard of Ed Schanfarber, in relation to his community, his people and lo everything that was good and noble. To have known him wus to admire, to respect and to love him. Because far above all of his other splendid qualities there stood out a characteristic which marked him as one who loved his fellowmen and who had made every possible ef¬ fort to serve and help them. Into that modest home on 1835 Oak Street and at his of¬ fices at liiO E. Broad S't., came the rich and the poor, the mighty and the lowly, the famous and the unknown and also a goodly number of those upon whom society had put the brand of "untouchability". It mattered not whether his visitor was one who made headlines because of his prominence or whether he was an ex-convict with the prison pallor still on his cheeks — Ed Schanfarber, big in stature and great in heart and of tire¬ less energy, received him as a friend and was ready, will¬ ing and able to help him. And he did so without delay and without the formality of any red tape. Words arc inadequate to give anyone, who did not know Ed well, a proper conception of his goodness and his greatness. 'To atteidlpt to enumerate all his accomplish¬ ments, would be futile. He founded the United Jewish Fund which is a model of its kind in America, and was its guiding spirit until his death. He was responsible for the erection of an important addition to the National Jewish Hospital in Denver which bears hia name. For twenty (Continued nn Page 4) ^IK.'SIOHIAL KIND M)K K. .1. He used to explain to his buddy at all H'nal B'rith conventions, Sidney G. Kusworm, that he was the ••official" messenger boy, primarily because h«' was the ONLY one. Among the many achievements of Edwih Schanfarber, his creation of the United Jewish Fund stands out pre-eminently. To the growth (Continued on Page 4) if I ll
