HISTORICAL SKETCH OF THE COLLECTION
Marble Cliff Quarries Company was incorporated in 1913 and headquartered in the Columbus, Ohio area. The company was controlled by the Kaufman family until it was sold in the 1980s. In addition to the quarry in Columbus, Marble Cliff Quarries Company owned portions of mining and stone companies in other states as well. The quarry in Columbus was at one time the largest limestone quarry in the United States and produced a variety of crushed limestone products that were used in the agriculture, construction and steel industries. The company changed its name from Marble Cliff Quarries Company to MCQ Industries, Inc. in March 1972.
SCOPE AND CONTENTS OF THE COLLECTION
The collection contains five business ledgers dating from approximately 1904 to 1920. The ledgers are records of companies associated with the Marble Cliff Quarries, including the Arrow Sand Company, Woodruff & Pausch Stone Company and Marble Cliff Quarries Company. The ledgers are accompanied by a 16 mm black-and-white film titled "Marble Cliff Quarries Segment, This is Our Town" produced by the Carson Company, Inc. of Mason City, Iowa. The film has tentatively been dated by the donor as taken in the early 1950s. The film has footage of the exterior of the company headquarters; aerial views of the quarries; employees and machinery working on the floor of the quarries; and other aspects of the operation, such as crushing and sorting limestone, separating waste sand, and bagging hydrated limestone for sale. Narration describes the quarrying process and the various uses for limestone and limestone by products in the agriculture, construction and steel industries. There is also footage of Columbus area buildings, such as Ohio Stadium, the Ohio State University Arena, Port
