AGENCY BACKGROUND
The Ohio Expositions commission replaced the Division of State Fair in the Department
of Agriculture as the managing body of the Ohio State Fair and other fairs in 1961. The
commission operates as an independent entity. It is comprised of sixteen members.
Fifteen members are appointed by the governor with the advice and consent of the
Senate and the Director of Agriculture.
FUNCTIONS OF THE RECORD SERIES
Documents the Ohio Exposition Center facilities and events held at the Center,
particularly the Ohio State Fair.
SCOPE AND CONTENTS OF THE SERIES
The collection consists of photographs (1,020), safety negatives (3 4x5 negs, ca. 207
35mm strips), 35 mm slides (137), video, film and audio recordings documenting the
Ohio Exposition Center facilities and events held at the Center. The bulk of the
photographs, negatives and slides document the Ohio State Fair from 1977 to 1993,
including agricultural contests and displays, commercial displays, fair officials,
grandstand events, the midway and shows. Video recordings depict general footage of
events at the Ohio State Fair and advertising for the Fair between 1982 and 1992.
There is also video footage of the Sale of Champions, the auction of award winning
livestock, for the years 1982, 1984, 1986 and 1988 through 1991. Additionally, there is
news coverage of the controversy surrounding the Fair’s champion steer in 1989. The
