AGENCY BACKGROUND
The Ohio Branch, Council of National Defense, was created on June 1, 1917, by order of
Governor James Cox. Thirty-four prominent citizens of Ohio served as members of the
Council. Under the guidance of Vice-chairman Fred C. Croxton, the Ohio Branch of the
Council of National Defense sought to realize its twofold purpose. First, the Council was
to direct the mobilization of Ohio’s resources for the duration of the war effort. Secondly,
it was to act as a liaison between Ohio and the National Council in Washington, D.C.
FUNCTIONS OF THE RECORD SERIES
Radio programs produced by the Ohio State Council of Defense to disseminate
information to the general public regarding civil defense activities during World War II.
SCOPE AND CONTENTS OF THE SERIES
The collection consists of nineteen radio programs copied on three audio cassettes. The
radio programs were originally recorded on 33 ½ rpm or 78 rpm audio transcriptions
discs. The recordings were copied to open reel audio masters. The cassette tapes
were copied from the master tapes for access. The radio programs were produced by
the Ohio State Council of Defense. Cassettes 1 and 2 contain thirteen episodes of the
