HISTORICAL SKETCH OF THE JOHN MOORE FAMILY
John Moore was born circa1886. His wife, Mary Jane, was born circa 1904. They were married
September 19, 1924 in Columbus, Ohio. In 1934, they resided at 840 E. Starr Avenue in
Columbus. In December 1934, they adopted a son whom they named Robert J. Moore (born
November 27, 1934). Mary Moore was still living in 1964.
SCOPE AND CONTENTS OF THE COLLECTION
The collection consists of one quarter cubic feet of personal papers of the John Moore family.
There are approximately 32 letters from Robert J. Moore to his mother while he served in the U.
S. Army with the 24th Infantry and the 47th Heavy Truck Company in Korea from 1950-1951.
There are also four letters written by Robert from the Columbus Workhouse in 1959. A letter
dated April 25, 1950 from the City of Columbus to Rev. Moore indicates that the family
residence must be vacated. Another letter from the Veterans Administration dated June 13, 1941
informs Mollie [sic] J. Moore that her cousin Henry Richardson is in the hospital. Also included
are Robert Moore’s adoption papers and insurance papers from the Columbus Dispatch Readers
Accident Insurance Association and the National Life and Accident Insurance Company. One
policy is for a man named Henry Huff. The collection also contains a booklet titled “Meal
Planning with Exchange Lists” about meal planning for diabetics and an envelope with 17 recipe
cards labeled “More Than 30 Ways to Use U.S.D.A. Donated Foods.” Audiovisual material
found in the collection includes a 45-rpm “Voice-o-Graph” recording from Robert to Mary in
August 1950, and a card photograph of an unidentified, young, married African-American
