HISTORICAL SKETCH OF THE COLLECTION
During the last two weeks of January 1937 the Ohio River reached record flood levels devastating cites and towns in southern Ohio and other states. Six to 12 inches of rain fell in Ohio during January 13-25, 1937, making January 1937 the wettest month recorded in Ohio. The height of the flood waters was reached on January 26th when the Ohio River crested at 80 feet in Cincinnati. Ten people were killed in the flood waters.
SCOPE AND CONTENTS OF THE COLLECTION
The collection is comprised of eight sound-tape reels of NBC coverage of the Ohio River floods in January 1937. The broadcasts, dating from January 23 through January 29, 1937, feature remote reports from cities in Ohio and other states that were affected by the flooding, including Pennsylvania, Kentucky, Tennessee, Indiana, Illinois and Arkansas.
