HISTORICAL SKETCH OF THE COLLECTION
John William Bricker was a Republican Senator from Ohio who served between 1947 and 1959. He was born near Mount Sterling, Madison County, Ohio, on September 6, 1893. The senator attended Ohio State University and was admitted to the bar in 1917. During the First World War, Bricker served as first lieutenant and chaplain in the United States Army. He returned home to become a lawyer and solicitor of Grandview Heights, Ohio and later assistant attorney general of the state. He ran for attorney general and won in 1933. Bricker served as Governor of Ohio between 1939 and 1945.
Frank John Lausche was a Democratic Senator from Ohio who served between 1957 and 1969. He was born in Cleveland, Cuyahoga County, Ohio on November 14, 1895. Lausche’s attended college after serving in WWI as a second lieutenant and graduated from John Marshall School of Law in 1920. He was a lawyer in Cleveland, Ohio until 1932 when he was elected Municipal Court and Common Pleas Court judge, as well as, mayor of Cleveland in 1941. In 1945 Lausche served as Governor of Ohio until his resignation on January 3, 1957 when he was elected to the Senate.
William Bart Saxbe was a Republican Senator from Ohio who served between 1969 and 1974. He was a native of Mechanicsburg, Champaign County, Ohio; born on June 24, 1916. The senator enlisted in The Ohio National Guard in 1937 and fought in the Second World War and Korea. Between the wars he attended Ohio State University law school and was admitted to the bar in 1948.
