HISTORICAL SKETCH OF THE COLLECTION
The Pioneer and Historical Society of Muskingum County was incorporated in March 1890 in
Zanesville, Ohio to collect materials related to the history of Muskingum County and its early
settlers.
SCOPE AND CONTENTS OF THE COLLECTION
The Pioneer and Historical Society of Muskingum County Audiovisual Collection consists of
over 4,000 images in a variety of formats, including include cartes de visite, cabinet cards,
boudoir cards, postcards, stereographs, antique photography, and glass plate negatives (N 28
G). The collection generally spans the years from circa 1860 to1950.
Portraits in the collection include scrapbooks of William G. Starke, a photographer who worked
in the Zanesville, Ohio in the late 19th century. The scrapbooks span the years from circa 1860
to 1890. The majority of photographs in the scrapbooks are portraits of Zanesville residents,
including African Americans. Many people are identified. Images of buildings, machinery,
animals and scenery were also found in the scrapbooks. Many of these photographs were
removed and filed by subject with other photographs of Zanesville.
