HISTORICAL SKETCH OF THE COLLECTION
James Garfield was the twentieth president of the United States. Garfield was born on
November 19, 1831 near Cleveland, Ohio. Between 1848 and 1851 he attended a
seminary and taught school. In 1851 he enrolled in what is now Hiram College in Ohio.
In 1854 he entered Williams College and graduated with honors in 1856. He returned to
Hiram College in 1858, where he served as principal. He married Lucretia Rudolph that
same year. In 1859 he was elected as a Republican to the Ohio Senate. He studied law
and was admitted to the bar.
During the Civil Was he rose to the rank of Major General and in 1863 he became chief
of staff to General William Rosecrans. He resigned his commission to enter the United
States House of Representatives in 1863, a position he held until 1880. In 1880 he was
elected to the United States Senate, but was nominated the Republican candidate for
president the same year. In 1881 he was elected president, and then assassinated after
serving only six months as president. Garfield was assassinated by Charles Guiteau.
SCOPE AND CONTENTS OF THE COLLECTION
The James Garfield Presidential Collection contains reproductions and original
photographs, prints and political ephemera. There are portraits of Garfield, his wife,
Lucretia Rudolph Garfield, and other family members. There are also photographs and
postcards of the Garfield's home, Lawnfield, in Mentor, Ohio. Images and ephemera
