HISTORICAL SKETCH OF THE COLLECTION
The first session of the Ohio Academy of History was held on April 8, 1932, at the Hotel
Cleveland of that city as a session of the sixty- first annual meeting of the Ohio College
Association. This meeting was a result of a circular letter sent to the academic
historians of the state by David R. Moore of Oberlin College and Harold E. Davis of
Hiram College. At the suggestion of Arthur C. Cole of Western Reserve University that
" a sophisticated name might attract attention" the name of the Ohio Academy of History
was chosen for the new organization. The purpose of the Academy is clearly stated in
Article II of its constitution which reads: " its object shall be to promote the study and
teaching of history, historical research, and publication of historical works; to encourage
historical organizations, libraries, and archives; and to aid in the elevation of the general
level of historical consciousness in the state of Ohio."
Each year the Academy holds an informal fall meeting, usually in October, on a college
campus; and an annual spring meeting in April with scholarly presentations, a luncheon,
and presidential address, a business meeting, and award presentations. In its early
years the Academy held its spring meeting in conjunction with the Ohio College
Association, except in 1935 when it met jointly with the Mississippi Valley Historical
Association in Cincinnati. Until the eariy 1970s the spring meeting often was held at the
Ohio State Archaeological and Historical Society building on the Ohio State University
campus in Columbus. At spring meetings from 1947 to 1970, except in 1952 when no
award was given, the Academy acknowledged the professional accomplishments of
members through its Historical Achievement Award. In 1971, two awards, one for an
outstanding historical publication and one for distinguished service to the historical
profession, replaced the achievement award. Prior to 1971 six individuals received
