1852 d u r i n g t h e g o l d r u s h . W i t h i n a f e w y e a r s , h o w e v e r , he was t h e
s e n i o r member i n t h e firh o f S . L. M a s t i c k and Company, m a n u f a c t u r e r s
and d e a l e r s i n l u m b e r . The f i r m had o f f i c e s a t P i e r 10, S t e w a r t
S t r e e t , San F r a n c i s c o , and owned t h e P o r t D i s c o v e r y l u m b e r m i l l s o f
P u g e t Sound, W a s h i n g t o n .
