HISTORICAL SKETCH OF THE PEN AND PENCIL CLUB

advance art in the Columbus area by assisting members with their professional growth.
The club was incorporated in 1905. The membership was comprised of artists working
in a variety of fields and media, including commercial artists, lithographers, architects,
photographers, cartoonists, illustrators and painters. Some of the Pen and Pencil Club's
better known members included George Bellows, Carl Springer, Ben Warden, Dudley
Fisher, Billy Ireland and Harry Westerman.
Each week from September to June the group would meet at their clubroom on 199 112
South High Street to sketch together, usually with a live model. The members would
offer each other criticism of their work. They also took outdoor excursions to sketch
landscapes and engage in recreational activities such as fishing and pitching
horseshoes. The group met for social gatherings at a cabin on Norwich Street.
Frequently, the Club would organize exhibits of members' works for the public.
