Biographical s k e t c h e s : Andrew Evans was born near Aberdeen,
Huntington Township, Ohio, on December 9 , 1809, the son of John
Evans J r . and Mary ( Hough) Evans. Andrew married Mary, the daughter
of William and Mary ( Daniels) H i e t t on June 13, 1833. The couale had
ten c h i l d r e n : Samuel, twin boys William H . and Abraham F . , John B . ,
Amos A., Mary, I s a b e l l a E . , A n n D . , Joseph H . , and Lee A .
Andrew Evans served the township i n s e v e r a l p o l i t i c a l c a p a c i t i e s
including J u s t i c e of the Peace, a p o s i t i o n he held f o r twelve
consecutive y e a r s . I n the f a l l of 1864 Evans was e l e c t e d to
r e p r e s e n t Brown County, Ohio, i n t h e s t a t e l e g i s l a t u r e . He was
the f i r s t Republican incumbent of t h a t o f f i c e ever e l e c t e d from
Brown County. While in o f f i c e he supported l e g i s l a t i o n to p r o t e c t
the i n t e r e s t s of the Civil War s o l d i e r and h i s dependents.
Evans was a member of the Huntington P r e s b y t e r i a n Church and a Ruling
Elder. He died in 1879 a t the age of seventy.
Samuel Evans, son of Andrew Evans, was born near Aberdeen, Huntington
Township, Brown County, Ohio, on April 1 8 , 1834. A t age t h i r t e e n he
began l e a r n i n g t h e b l a c k s v i t h t r a d e and s e r v e d a s a n a p p r e n t i c e f o r
seven y e a r s . Samuel a l s o taught two terms a t a d i s t r l ' c t s c h o o l ,
" twenty l e s s o n s " in grammar school, and several c l a s s e s in vocal music.
I n 1855 he purchased a f l o u r mill b u i l t by h i s g r e a t - g r a n d f a t h e r i n
1828. He was a loyal Democrat u n t i l t h e f a l l of Fort Sumter ( 1861)
when he endorsed P r e s i d e n t L i n c o l n ' s p o l i t i c a l p o l i c i e s .
