( O. V: I.) was o r g a n i z e d a t Camp McArthur n e a r lirbana on December
1 7 , 1 8 6 1 , and was composed of 850 men from Champaign, D e l a w a r e ,
Logan, a n d Union C o u n t i e s . On J a n u a r y 1 7 , 1862, t h e u n i t l e f t
Camp McArthur t o engage t h e C o n f e d e r a t e f o r c e s o f G e n e r a l Thomas
J . " S t o n e w a l l " J a c k s o n in t h e Shenandoah V a l l e y of Virginia. By
t h e end of t h e w a r , t h e u n i t had s e r v e d i n t w e l v e s t a t e s , t r a v e l e d
11,000 m i l e s , and p a r t i c i p a t e d in e i g h t e e n b a t t l e s i n c l u d i n g
A n t i e t a m , G e t t y s b u r g , and Lookout : f o u n t a i n . The 6 6 t h O . V . I . a l s o
h e l p e d q u e l l t h e llew York C i t y d r a f t r i o t s and p a r t i c i p a t e d i n
General S h e r m a n ' s march t n r o u g h G e o r g i a . The 6 6 t h O . V . I . was
t h e f i r s t r e g i m e n t from Ohio t o r e - e n l i s t i n 1863 and thus became
a " v e t e r a n v o l u n t e e r " u n i t . By t h e t i m e t h e u n i t was d i s c h a r g e d
in Columbus on J u l y 1 9 , 1 8 6 5 , i t had r e c e i v e d 370 a d d i t i o n a l
recruits, had 110 of i t s men k i l l e d in b a t t l e , w j t h 370 wounded,
and 144 dead from d i s e a s e .
Colonel C h a r l e s Candy was t h e commanding o f f i c e r of t h e 66th
O . V . I . t h r o u g h much of t h e war. Eugene Powell was commissioned
a major of t h e 6 6 t h O . V . I . on O c t o b e r 2 2 , 1861, h a v i n g s e r v e d
p r e v i o u s l y in t h e 4th O. V. I. He was promotea t o l i e u t e n a n t - c o l o n e l
on May 24, 1862, and was d i s c h a r g e d from t h e 6 6 t h O . V . 1 . t o become
c o l o n e l of t h e 193rd O . V . I . on April 25, 1865. PoweT1 was m u s t e r e d
o u t w i t h t h a t r e g i m e n t on August 4 , 1865, and r e c e i v e d t h e h o n o r i a l
rank of b r e v e t b r i g a d i e r - g e n e r a l on March 1 3 , 1865.
