Preliminary inventory
Collection Synopsis
Provenance: The Ohio Historical Society acquired the Arthur
Poppenhaeger Papers as a gift of Arthur Poppenhaeger, Columbus,
Ohio, in June 1983. Barbara Floyd processed the collection in
July 1983.
Property rights: The Ohio Historical Society owns the property
rights to this collection.
Copyrights: Arthur Poppenhaeger has dedicated such copyrights as
he possesses in this collection to the public. Consideration of
all other copyrights is the responsibility of the author and
publisher.
Access: This collection is open under the rules and regulations
of the Ohio Historical Society.
Citation: Researchers are requested to cite collection name,
collection number, and the Ohio Historical Society in all foot-note
and bibliographic references.
Transfer: Maps and printed material from the collection were
transferred to the library and photographs to the audiovisual
collections in June and July 1983.
Biographical sketch: Arthur Poppenhaeger was born January 16,
1898, in in Columbus, Ohio. In 1932, after working at the Brown
Lamp Company and the D. L. Auld Company in the shipping departments,
he began to work at the August Wagner and Sons Products Company, a
Columbus brewery. In 1934, Poppenhaeger joined the Brewery, Soft
Drink and Allied Workers Local Union No. 47, where he became
secretary and business agent for the local in 1952. During his
fifteen years as an officer he negotiated many contracts, helped
members involved in grievance and arbitration cases, served as a
union counselor, helped organize the Pepsi Cola Bottling Company of
Columbus in 1961, and worked on several union charity drives.
Poppenhaeger also served as president of the Ohio and Kentucky State
Council of Brewery, Soft Drink, Syrup and Allied Workers in 1958. He
sat on the Columbus Federation of Labor and Columbus Congress of
Industrial Organizations merger committee in 1960. Poppenhaeger re-signed
from local 47 in 1970 and from the Columbus- Franklin County
AFL- CIO Executive Board in 1974.
