Provenance: The Ohio H i s t o r i c a l Society acquired the James W.
Huffman Sr. Papers as a g i f t of James W. Huffman Jr., Pickerington,
Ohio, i n May 1982. Barbara Floyd processed the c o l l e c t i o n i n
December 1932.

Biographical sketch: James Wylie Huffman Sr. was born on Sep- cember
13, 1894, i n C h a n d l e r s v i l l e , Muskingum County, Ohio. He attended
Ohio Wesleyan University, The Ohio S t a t e University, and received
a l a w degree i n 1922 from the University of Chicago. He served
as a s s i s t a n t a t t o r n e y general f o r I l l i n o i s i n 1923 and returned
t o Ohio the following year when he became e x e c u t i v e s e c r e t a r y to
Governor A. Victor Donahey. In 1 9 2 7 , he was appointed t o the
' Public U t i l i t i e s Commission of Ohio, serving f o r two years. In
1929, he opened a law p r a c t i c e i n Columbus s p e c i a l i z i n g i n cor-poration
l a w . After serving as d i r e c t o r of commerce for the s t a t e ,
he was appointed on October 8, 1945, by Governor Frank B. Lausche
t o f i l l the vacancy i n the U. S. Senate c r e a t e d by t h e resignation
of Harold H. Burton. He l o s t the s e a t i n t h e 1946 election.
Following t h i s d e f e a t , he became d i r e c t o r and general counsel f o r
Motorists Insurance Companies and rose t o t h e p o s i t i o n of president
and chairman of t h e board before r e t i r i n g i n 1970. He married
Margaret Donahey, daughter o f t h e governor, i n 1925. Huffman died
i n 1980.
