Organizational sketch: The I n t e r n a t i o n a l Union of Elevator
Constructors ( IUEC) organized Local 37 i n Columbus, Ohio, on April
5 , 1 9 1 2 . In the l o c a l ' s 1953 c o n s t i t u t i o n and by- laws, it s t a t e d
as its objectives the following: the encouragement o f higher
standards of s k i l l s i n the c r a f t , the c u l t i v a t i o n of friendship
among the various c r a f t unions, a s s i s t i n g of fellow members in
securing employment, the elevation of the conditions of i t s
members, and the improvement of t h e t r a d e . In a 1969 revision,
the l o c a l added these o b j e c t i v e s : p r o t e c t i n g t h e j u r i s d i c t i o n of
the c r a f t ; and engaging i n c i v i l , l e g i s l a t i v e , f r a t e r n a l ,
educational, c h a r i t a b l e , welfare and s o c i a l a c t i v i t i e s for its
members. The local i s governed by a president, a vice president,
a recording secretary, a f i n a n c i a l s e c r e t a r y - t r e a s u r e r , t r u s t e e s ,
a warden, a business r e p r e s e n t a t i v e , and an executive board.
Elections for these o f f i c e s are held yearly. The l o c a l p a r t i c i -
pated i n two nationwide s t r i k e s , one i n 1967 t h a t l a s t e d over one
month, and one i n 1972, l a s t i n g almost four months.
