Prelixinary inventory
Collection Synopsis
Provenance: The Ohio Historical Society acquired the Youngstown
Sheet and Tube Company Records as a gift of Jones and Laughlin
Steel Incorporated, through the auspices of the vice- president,
R. E. Grieve, in October 1981. Marjorie J. Myers processed the
collection in December 1981.
Property rights: The Ohio Historical Society owns the property
rights to this collection.
Copyrights: Jones and Laughlin Steel Incorporated dedicated such
copyrights as it possesses in this collection to the public.
Consideration of all other copyrights is the responsibility of
the author and publisher.
Access: This collection is open cnder the rules and regulations
of the Ohio Historical Society.
Citation: Researchers are requested to cite collection name,
collection number, and the Ohio Historical Society ix all footnote
and bibliographic references.
Transfer: From October through December 1981, the following were
transferred: negative and positive photographs to the audio- visual
department; and printed material, including the PS& T Bulletin and
Yield, to the library de~ artment.
Organizational sketch: The Youngstown Iron Sheet anc? Tube Company
was organized on November 21, 1900, in Youngstom, Ohio, to manu-facture
and sell sheet iron and steel and other iron and steel
products. The word iron was dropped from the coinpany's name in
1905. The first YShT plant was built in East Youngstown, later
renamed Campbell after YS& T1s first president J. A. Campbell.
Through the sale of capital stock, YS& T purchased land for mills,
invested in mining companies and blast furnaces, and organized the
Continental Supply Company ( 1912) to sell and handle oil well
supplies. In 1923, YS& T took over the Brier Hill Steel Company
( Ohio) and the Steel and Tube Company of America ( Illinois and
Indiana). This latter became the Indiana Harbor plant of YS& T1s
Chicago District, with the original Campbeil plant and new Brier
Hill plant comprising the Youngstown District.
YS& T continued to expand its subsidiary holdings in iron ore ranges,
coal and zinc mines, fiberglass and plastic products, railroad
lines and equipment, and insurance and securities companies.
Several merger attempts, including those with Bethlehem Steel ( 1930)
and U. S. Steel ( 1956), were unseccessful. In 1969, however, YS& T
and the Lykes Corporation merged to form Lykes- Youngstown; YS& T
became a wholly- owned subsidiary of this holding company. Due to
