Preliminary Inventory
COLLECTION SYNOPSIS
Provenance: The Ohio Historical Society acquired the John
Kaufman Papers as a gift of Mrs. Wallace Moore, Columbus, Ohio,
in January 1981. David Gray prepared the preliminary inventory
in February 1981.
Property rights: The Ohio Historical Society owns the property
rights to this collection.
Copyrights: Mrs. Wallace Moore has dedicated such copyrights
as she possesses in this collection to the public. Considera-tion
of all other copyrights is the responsibility of the
author and publisher.
Access: This collection is open under the rules and regulations
of the Ohio Historical Society.
Citation: Researchers are requested to cite collection name,
collection number, and the Ohio Historical Society in all foot-note
and bibliographic references.
Biographical sketch: John Kaufman was born on August 22, 1764,
in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. A physician by profession, Kaufman
moved to Richland County, Ohio, in 1828 and practiced medicine
until his death in 1845. John Kaufman's son, Daniel, was born
June 30, 1810, in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, and moved with his
parents to Ohio. Daniel Kaufman attended school in Maumee,
Ohio, and trained to be a millwright. He owned and operated
a small mill near Mifflin, Ohio, until 1849. Returning to the
- family homestead, Kaufman farmed until his death in 1890.

Scope and content: The account books and receipts of John and
Daniel Kaufman date from 1804 to 1888 and comprise one- half
cubic foot. John Kaufman's account books and receipts document
his work as a physician in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, and
Richland County, Ohio, from 1804 to 1845. The account books
reflect his financial affairs and offer some information
concerning nineteenth century medical treatment. Other items
include a petition to the Ohio legislature protesting the
incorporation of medical societies, 1824; and a German- language
Lutheran hymn book, 1807. The account books and receipts of
Daniel Kaufman document the administration of the family farm from
1840 to 1888.
