Biographical s k e t c h : Szmuel Leeper Devine was born i n South send,
I n d i a n a , o n December 2 1 , 1915. H i s family moved t o ColumSu_ ss, Ohio,
i n 1920 where Devv* ine a t t e n d e d p u b l i c s c h o o l . In 1933 he e n r o l l e d
in Colgate U n i v e r s i t y but l e f t t h e following year t o a t t e n d The
Ohio S t a t e U n i v e r s i t y , g r a d u a t i n g i n 1937. He r e c e i v e d h i s law
degree from Notre Dame V n i v e r s i t y i n 1940 and t h a t same year was
appointed s p e c i a l agent f o r t h e F e d e r a l Bureau of I n v e s t i g a t i o n .
From 1951 to 1955 he serveJ as a Republican i n t h e Ohio l e g i s l a t u r e ,
and i n 1955 was e l e c t e d p r o s e c u t i n g a t t o r n e y f o r F r a n k l i n County,
Ohio. In 1958 he ran f o r the U. S. House o f R e p r e s e n t a t i v e s from
Ohio's t w e l f t h d i s t r i c t and was e l e c t e d f o r eleven c o n s e c u t i v e
terms, ~ n t i dl e f e a t e d i n 1930.
