Biographical sketch: James E. Richards was born on August 1 8 ,
1937, i n Shadyside, Ohio. He practiced journalism in several
c i t i e s including Columbus, and since 1971 has served c l i e n t s in
the c e n t r a l Ohio area with a wide range of marketing and communica-t
i o n s consulting services as president of Richard Communications,
I n c . , of Caldwell, Ohio. Richards managed Tom Moody's f i r s t
campaign for mayor of Columbus i n 1 9 7 1 , and was involved with
Moody's re- election bids in 1975 and 1 9 7 9 , in addition to numerous
other p o l i t i c a l candidates and i s s u e s .

Scope and content: The James E. Richards papers date from 1971
t o 1979 and occupy one cubic foot. Richards c o l l e c t e d the papers
i n h i s p o s i t i o n a s a d v e r t i s i n g consultant f o r the 1971, 1975, and
1979 Columbus mayoral campaigns of Tom Moody. The papers are
grouped by campaign and organized according t o function. The
papers document the many f a c e t s of an e l e c t i o n campaign and contain
brochures, f l i e r s , t v and radio s c r i p t s ; expense statements and
cost a n a l y s e s ; p r e s s r e l e a s e s and position papers; public appearance
requests and meeting schedules; campaign s t r a t e g y r e p o r t s and fund-r
a i s i s g plans; and extensive f i l e s on public opinion p o l l s , including
c o n f i d e n t i a l surveys and r e p o r t s . Also included a r e f i l e s on v i s i t s
in 1976 by President and M r s . Ford and Earl Butz. These contain
press c r e d e n t i a l s , r e l e a s e s , i t i n e r a r y , and the speech Ford gave a t
the Governor's Conference on Aging.
