HISTORICAL SKETCH OF THE COLLECTION
The late 1970’ s were a period of change and renovation for urban neighborhoods in Columbus, Ohio. German Village, a historic neighborhood south of downtown Columbus that was settled by German immigrants in the mid 19th century, began renovation in the 1960’ s. By 1980 the area was officially listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Short North area, just north of downtown Columbus along N. High Street between Poplar St. and Cedar Ave., was a thriving business district in the late 19th century and early 20th century. After several decades of neglect, the mid 1970’ s was a turning point as investors began buying and renovating property. By 1990 the area was officially listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Mount Vernon Avenue area, a historically African American neighborhood, saw businesses leave due to highway construction and civil disturbances in the late 1960’ s. New businesses and services began to locate in the area in the late 1970’ s and early 1980’ s. A landmark that was saved during this period was the arch from Columbus’ Union Station. The station was built in 1897 and used until the early 1970’ s. In 1976 despite concern of preservationists the Station was demolished. The arch, part of the commercial arcade that faced high street, was dismantled in 1977.
