BIOGRAPHY OF THE JEFFREY FAMILY AND JEFFREY MANUFACTURING COMPANY
“ If it’s conveyed, processed or mined, it’s a job for Jeffrey” – motto of the Jeffrey Manufacturing
Company.
The Jeffrey Manufacturing Company was the world’s leading producer of mining, conveying,
and heavy industrial equipment for nearly 100 years. Jeffrey designed material handling
products for a wide variety of uses, such as coal mining, farming, amusement park rides, earth-moving,
lumber mills, and food processing. The use of specialized Jeffrey equipment reduced
handling costs, increased production, and decreased hard physical labor. Part of the
Company’s success was due to the wide variety of industries that profited from the use of
Jeffrey conveying and loading systems to move materials.
The founder of the company, Joseph A. Jeffrey, was born on January 17th, 1836, in Clarksville,
Vinton County, Ohio. His father, James, was a New England farmer, born in New Jersey, while
his mother, Angleline, was from Warren County, Ohio. Sometime later, the Jeffrery family
moved to St. Mary’s, Auglaize County, Ohio, where Joseph finished high school.
Settling in Columbus, Jeffrey worked as a bank bookkeeper, teller, and cashier from 1858 to
1866. In 1866, Jeffrey moved to Cincinnati to manage a carpet and furniture store, learning
more business skills in the state’s largest city. Although he was successful in that business, he
sold his interest a year later and returned to Columbus and re- entered the world of banking as a
head cashier. Also in 1866, Jeffrey married Celia Harris. They had six children, Minnie,
Florence, Robert, Agnes, Joseph, and Malcolm.
