AV 68 Ohio Statehouse Photograph Collection Page 1 OHIO HISTORICAL SOCIETY Manuscripts/ Audiovisual Collections AV 68 Ohio Statehouse Photograph Collection ( 1893- 1902) OVERVIEW OF THE COLLECTION Number: AV 68 Title: Ohio Statehouse Photograph Collection Creator: Unknown Dates: 1893- 1902 Media: Photographs Quantity: 0.30 cubic feet Location: Ohio Historical Center HISTORICAL SKETCH OF THE COLLECTION Construction of the current Ohio Statehouse was completed in 1861. The Statehouse Annex was built in 1901. Decorating the Statehouse and nearby buildings with black crape in honor of the passing of high ranking government officials was common in the 19th century. Rutherford B. Hayes served two terms as Ohio Governor from 1868 to 1872. He was elected to a third term as Ohio Governor in 1876, but did not finish this term because he was elected President. Hayes was the nineteenth president of the United States serving from 1877 to 1881. Hayes passed away in 1893 and was buried on the grounds of Spiegel Grove, his home in Fremont, Ohio. William McKinley served two terms as Governor of Ohio from 1891 to 1896. In 1896 he was elected two his first term as President of the United States. McKinley led the nation as Commander in Chief during the Spanish- American War of 1898- 1899. In 1900 he was elected to a second term as President. However, this term was cut short in 1901 when McKinley was assassinated while attending the Pan- American Exposition in Buffalo, New York. He was laid to rest in his hometown of Canton, Ohio. SCOPE AND CONTENTS OF THE COLLECTION The collection contains 9 black and white, mounted photographs depicting interior and exterior views of the Ohio Statehouse and the Statehouse Annex between 1894 and 1902. Two photographs depict the interior of the Statehouse rotunda draped in black crape to honor the passing of former Ohio Governor and United States President Rutherford B. Hayes in 1893. There are five photographs of the interior, one photograph of the exterior of the Statehouse and one photograph of the exterior of the Statehouse Annex decorated in black crape for the assassination of President and former Ohio
