HISTORICAL SKETCH OF THE COLLECTION
The 8th U. S. Infantry was involved in the invasion of Cuba on July1, 1898. Companies A through H were sent to Cuba and they were part of the First Brigade, Second Division of the Fifth Army Corps. Under the command of Brigadier General Ludlow, the 8th Infantry, along with the 22nd U. S. Infantry attacked the city of Santiago on July 1. The city surrendered on July 17. The 8th Infantry was originally supposed to take part in the assault on San Juan Heights, but fighting elsewhere took longer than expected and they arrived after the Heights had been taken. In August of 1898 the 8th U. S. Infantry took part in the invasion of Puerto Rico. There was very little resistance and fighting because on August 12, 1898 the United States and Spain signed an armistice ending the fighting. From then on, portions of the 8th Infantry served as occupation forces in both Puerto Rico and Cuba, those who did not stay were sent back to Huntsville, Alabama.
