HISTORICAL SKETCH OF THE COLLECTION
Ohio Statehouse
The cornerstone for the present Ohio Statehouse was laid on July 4, 1839. The General Assembly occupied it on January 5, 1857 and the building was finally completed in 1861. It faces East Broad Street on the north, East State Street on the south, Third Street on the east and South High Street on the west. Additions made to the Statehouse since 1861 include the Senate annex on the east side completed in 1901 and the McKinley Monument unveiled in 1906.
Elsie Janis
Elsie Janis was born in Columbus, Ohio on March 16, 1889. She began performing on stage as a very young child and made her professional debut at the Southern Theatre in Columbus when she was seven. At age ten she performed for President McKinley at the White House. As a teenager she was starring in musicals in New York City and London. During World War I Janis became the first female entertainer to perform for the soldiers at camps near the front lines. She was nicknamed “ Sweetheart of the Doughboys.” After the war she continued to produce the review, “ Elsie and Her Gang,” that she had performed for the soldiers. In addition to performing, Janis also composed music, wrote lyrics, directed and produced musicals. She died in Los Angeles, California on February 26, 1956.
