HISTORICAL SKETCH OF THE COLLECTION
Newark, Ohio native, Geraldine ( Jerrie) Fredritz Mock ( 1925- ) was the first woman to fly solo around the world. She married, pilot Russell Mock in 1945 and had three children in Bexley, Ohio. In 1962, she began researching a solo flight around the world. The couple bought a 1953 Cessna 180, registered N1538C, and christened it The Spirit of Columbus. It was given the nickname “ Charlie.” The trip took place March 19 and ended on April 17, 1964. Mock entirely planned and executed the preparations for the around the world trip but there was a good amount of discussion in 1964 about a “ flying housewife.”
SCOPE AND CONTENTS OF THE COLLECTION
This collection contains photographs, manuals and aeronautical charts from the period of Jerrie Mock’s first flight around the world in 1964. There are images of her Cessna 180, “ The Spirit of Columbus,” and Jerrie Mock preparing for the flight. There are also some after- flight promotional images and commemorative newspaper articles. Additionally, there are 3, 45rpm audio discs dedicated to Jerrie Mock and titled: Around the World in 29 Days.
