HISTORICAL SKETCH OF THE COLLECTION
The Agricultural Adjustment Act was passed in 1933 as part of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s New Deal program. The program, operated by the U. S. Department of Agriculture, was established to reduce the surplus of crops and livestock on the market, thus making farm products more profitable to produce. This was accomplished by subsidizing farmers to grow less. The AAA was soon declared unconstitutional by the U. S. Supreme Court. The Agricultural Adjustment Act of 1938, which improved on those measures found unconstitutional in the first bill, was passed and declared constitutional.
