HISTORICAL SKETCH OF THE COLLECTION
Homer L. Ruh, born in Columbus, Ohio on September 19, 1895, was the son of William F. Ruh and Caroline Trein. He had an older brother, Emmett E. Ruh. The Ruh’s family farm was located in Columbus at what is now 1064 and 1068 S. 22nd St. Both Homer and Emmett Ruh served with the American Expeditionary Force in Europe during World War I. Homer trained at Camp Sheridan, Alabama. He was with the 37th Infantry Division in France and Belgium from June 15, 1918 until March 23, 1919. On April 12, 1919 Ruh was honorably discharged. He was awarded the Silver Star for gallantry by General John J. Pershing.
After service in World War I, Ruh was a professional football player with the Columbus Panhandles ( later the Columbus Tigers), an early National Football League franchise. The Panhandles were not among the eleven franchises represented at the League’s first meeting, but were ready to play when the inaugural season started in 1920. The team operated in the NFL from 1920- 1926 and Homer L. Ruh played from 1920 to 1925. His positions were offensive end, wingback, blocking back and full back. On April 24, 1930 Ruh married Lucille Murray at the Broad Street Methodist Church in Columbus, Ohio. They had two daughters, Shirley Ruh Bennett and Sharon Ruh Manhart. He died on October 4, 1971 and is buried in Greenlawn Cemetery in Columbus, Ohio.
