Provenance: The Ohio Historical Society acquired the W. Storer
How Papers from Andrew Reed in 1942. Mary Higley processed the
collection in December 1978, and Ray Weisman revised the
inventory in October 1979.

rights to this collection.

Transfer: One architectural drawing of an unidentified military
hospital or barracks was transferred to the Audiovisual Department.
Biographical sketch: W. Storer How graduated from the Philadelphia
College of Dental Surgery in 1854. He entered the U. S. military
as a private in Company E, 9th Regiment, New York Volunteers. How
rose to the rank of Captain ( Brevet Major) and held the post of
Assistant Quartermaster and Superintendent of the Bureau of Refugees,
Freedmen and Abandoned Lands, Sixth District, Winchester, Virginia,
at his discharge. He mustered out of the service in 1866 and went
to Cincinnati, where he took up dental surgery and served as the
secretary of the board of trustees of the Ohio College of Dental
Surgery in Cincinnati, He was also involved in Cincinnati politics
and served as secretary of the Stranger's Home ( YMCA).
Scope and content: The W. Storer How Papers span the years 1853-
1882, and reflect in a very fragmentary way several facets of How's
career, The collection contains both personal and military
correspondence ( 1861- 1868), including General Orders and Bureau of
Refuqees, Freedmen and Abandoned Lands correspondence; dentistry
lecture tickets and Ohio Dental College Board of Trustee's minutes
( 1880- 1881); Cincinnati YMCA Stranger's Home correspondence and
reports; and miscellaneous materials. These last include drawings
of inventions and a graveyard plat in Wilson's Landing, Va.;
depositions and a court decision in a hotel brawl case ( Ainerican
Hotel, Staunton, Va.); diet charts from Harewood Hospital,
Washington, D. C., 1863; 2nd letters and clippings concerning HOW'S
1879 bid for Cincinnati city council.
