Preliminary inventory
Collection Synopsis
Provenance: The Ohio Historical Society acquired the Robert
Price Papers as a gift of RoSert Price, Westerville, Ohio, in
February 1974. Kay Weisman processed the collection in November
1979.
Property rights: The Ohio Historical Society owns the property
rights to this collection.
Copyrights: Copyrights to this collection have n- ot been dedicated
to the public. Consideration of the requirements of copyright
is the responsibility of the author and publisher.
Access: This collection is open under the rules and regulations
of the Ohio Historical Society.
Citation: Researchers are reques- ted to cite collection na;?. e,
collection number, and the Ohio Historical Society in all
footnote and bibliographic references.
Transfer: Approximately 180 photographs, seven 78 rpm records,
ten annotated maps of Ohio and 1ndiana; and one menu were trans-ferred
to the Audiovisual Department.
The following materials were transferred to the Library Division:
five pamphlets on Johnny Appleseed; a Longmeadow ( Massachusetts)
Sesquicentennial soul- enir booklet, 1933; a Leininger family
genealogy, 1971; and a pamphlet by Helen Keller.
Biographical sketch: Robert Price was born in Wales in 1900,
and moved to Licking County, Ohio, with his family in 1902. He
earned a bachelor's degree at Denison University and master's and
doctorate degrees at Ohio State University. Price taught English
at Ohio State from 1928 to 1945, and at Otterbein College from
1945 until his retirement in 1970. His special interest was
regional literature and folklore of the Mrdwest. He spent nearly
twenty- five years researching Johnny Appleseed ( John Chapman) and
received a Library of Congress grant- in- aid to finish his book,
Johnny Appleseed: Man and Myth ( Indiana University Press, 1954).
Scope and content: The Robert Price Papers span the years 1936-
1973 and contain correspondence, speeches, and research notes
deallrlg with his study of the life and legend of Johnny Appleseed
( John Chanman). The Dasers are divided into three arouns: L L
corresponhence, arranged by state; speeches; and nofes ior and
book reviews of Johnny Appleseed: Man and Myth. Although Price's
