Biographical sketches: Orrmel H. Fitch was born on January 12,
1803, in Lebanon, Connecticut. He studied law in Massachusetts
and passed the Connecticut bar shortly before moving to Ohio.
Fitch came to Cleveland in May 1827, and settled in Ashtabula
in March 1828, being admitted to the Ohio bar in May 1828.
That year he also began writing editorials for the Western
Journal and eventually edited the Ashtabula S e n t i n e l i v e
years. Fitch, a staunch Whig and later a Republican, held
various minor elective offices in the county including justice
of the peace, state legislator, prosecuting attorney, and Civil
War loan agent. He married Catharine M. Hubbard ( d. 1859) in
1835 and in 1860 took his son Edward as a partner into his law
practice. Orrmel Fitch died on September 17, 1882.
Edward H. Fitch was born on May 27, 1837, in Ashtabula, Ohio.
He received his BA ( 1858) and MA ( 1861) from Williams College
and returned to Ohio to study law with his father. Fitch was
admitted to the Ohio bar in 1860 and partnered at various times
with Horace Wilder, L. S. Sherman, and S. A. Northway. We prac-ticed
law in Jefferson, Ohio, and also was elected to the Ohio
House of Representatives in 1869. Fitch was key in the adoption
of the Torrens System of Registration of Land Titles, having
spoken and chaired a commission on the topic. As a Republican
and school friend, he help. ed secure the nomination of James
Garfield to the U. S. Congress. Fitch married Alta D. Winchester
on October 27, 1863; five of their eight children survived.
