B i o g r a p h i c a l s k e t c h : Andrew L i n t e r H a r r i s became O h i o ' s f o r t y -
f o u r t h g o v e r n o r o n June 18, 1906, a f t e r t h e death o f John M.
P a t t i s o n . H a r r i s , t h e l a s t C i v i l War v e t e r a n governor o f Ohio,
then i n h i s t h i r d t e r m as l i e u t e n a n t g o v e r n o r , served t h e
remainder o f P a t t i s o n t s term. I n t h e 19Q8 g e n e r a l e l e c t i o n ,
however, h i s b i d f o r h i s own term f e l l s h o r t , t h u s ending h i s
long c a r e e r i n p u b l i c s e r v i c e .
Andrew L. H a r r i s was born near Oxford, M i l f o r d Township, B u t l e r
County, Ohio, on November 17, 1835. I n 1838, t h e H a r r i s f a m i l y
moved t o D i x o n Township, P r e b l e County. Andrew L. H a r r i s was one
o f seven c h i l d r e n o f Benjamin and Nancy L i n t e r H a r r i s , and t h e
o n l y c h i l d t o s u r v i v e t o a d u l t h o o d , H a r r i s e n t e r e d Miami U n i v e r -
, s i t y i n Oxford, Ohio, i n January 1858, where he roomed w i t h h i s
jcj:; t{~ cousint H a r r i s . While i n c o l i e g e , Andrew p a r t i c i p a t e d i n
c o l l e g e debates and became an accomplished speaker by t h e t i m e he
earned a b a c h e l o r o f s c i e n c e degree i n June 1860.
i n A p r i l 1861, H a r r i s e n l i s t e d i n t h e T w e n t i e t h Ohio V o l u n t e e r
I n f a n t r y f o r t h r e e months. He became a second l i e u t e n a n t i n
Company C o f t h e S e v e n t y - F i f t h Ohio V o l u n t e e r I n f a n t r y on October
8, 1861, and a c a p t a i n o f t h a t r e g i m e n t on November 9, 1861.
He saw a c t i o n i n e i g h t e e n b a t t l e s d u r i n g t h e war i n c l u d i n g
C h a n c e l l o r s v i l l e , G e t t y s b u r g , Cedar Mountain, and t h e second
b a t t l e o f B u l l Run. D u r i n g a s k i r m i s h near McDowell, V i r g i n i a ,
