Biographical sketch: Samuel Stillman Miner was born in Wethersfield,
Hartford County, Connecticut, on March 8, 1808, the second child
of Seldon and Elizabeth Miner. Fis f a t h e r , a shoe manufacturer,
died i n 1844. Samuel Miner attended public school u n t i l he was
twelve, and i i e t h e r s f i e l d Academy u n t i l he was s i x t e e n . He then
began t o l e a r n t h e shoemaking trade and became a foreman i n h i s
f a t h e r ' s shoe f a c t o r y , a position he held u n t i l 1830. From 1830
t o 1832 Miner e s t a b l i s h e d and operated a shoe f a c t o r y f o r h i s
uncle, Norman Smith, i n Hartford, Connecticut. Miner moved to
Maysville, Kentucky, i n 1833 and began a shoe business with Henry
Taylor. Although t h i s partnership l a s t e d only one o r two years,
Miner and a succession o f other p a r t n e r s maintained a prosperous
business. He married Araminta Brooks on December 14, 1835.
Samuel Miner was a c t i v e s o c i a l l y i n the community, c o n t r i b u t i n g
h i s time and money t o Maysville area schools. In 1838 he became
a member of the Maysville B a p t i s t Church, holding t h e o f f i c e s of
t r u s t e e , t r e a s u r e r , deacon, c l e r k , and Sunday school superintendent.
Miner, a supporter of Andrew Jackson, remained l o y a l to the
Democratic party u n t i l 1860 when he voted f o r Abraham. Lincoln.
