BIOGRAPHY OF ALBERT D. TAYLOR
Albert D. Taylor was born 0x1 July 8", 1883 in Carlisle, MA, the twin son of Nathaniel A. and
Ellen F. Taylor. He received his S. B. degree fi- om Massachusetts Agricultural College in 1905.
That same year he received an A. B. degree from Boston College, and graduated with a Master's
degree from Come11 in 1906. He remained at Come11 for two years as an instructor in landscape
architecture. During the summer of 1907, Taylor studied European landscape works. I- Ie left
Cornell in 1908 to work for Warren H. Manning as a draftsman, rising to general superintendent
and became an associate in the finn by 1912.
He opened his own office in Cleveland in 1913, and continued in practice until his death. During
his career his other academic contacts were non- resident Professor of Landscape Architecture,
Ohio State University ( 1916- 1924); lecturer on landscape architecture, University of Michigan
( from 1938); trustee, Cambridge School of Architecture & Landscape Architecture, Cambridge
( 1913); and trustee, Lake Forest Foundation, Lake Forest, IL ( 1924). He received the honorary
degrees of Sc. D. from Oregon State College ( 1940) and a L1. D. from Massachusetts State College
( 1945). He also held memberships in the graduate honorary fraternity Galmna Alpha, and the
honorary scholarship fraternity, Phi Kappa Phi, at Cornell University.
Taylor became a junior member of the American Society of Landscape Architects in 1908, and
attained full membership in 191 1, and Fellowship in 1919. He served as a Trustee fiom 1921-
1930 and again in 1941, as Vice- President, 1932- 1943, and as President 1935- 1940. Taylor also
member of the American Institute of Park Executives, the American Institute of Planners, the
American Society of Civil Engineers, the American Planning & Civic Association, and the
American Society of Planning Officials.
